Wabash lost both games of its North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader at DePauw Sunday afternoon. The Little Giants rallied in the ninth inning of game one, only to fall short 4-3. Wabash lost game two 5-3.
The Little Giants (25-11, 10-6 NCAC) took an early lead in game one off an RBI double by
Sean Roginski in the third inning, but DePauw (9-23, 7-9 NCAC) tied the score at 1-1 with an RBI triple in the bottom half of the inning. The Tigers tacked on runs in the fourth, fifth, and eighth innings to take a 4-1 lead heading into the ninth.
The first two Wabash batters were retired before
Henry Wannemuehler reached safely on an error by DePauw's third baseman.
Jared Wolfe took advantage of the miscue, crushing shot to right field for a two-run home run, his third home run of the season. Roginski followed the two-run blast by reaching on another error.
Jackson Blevins reached base with a single up the middle. Roginski and Blevins advanced an extra base when the Tigers' centerfielder was unable to handle the ball.
Bryce Aldridge was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but a strikeout ended the inning and the game.
Wabash was held to eight hits for the game, led by Roginski and
Matthew Annee with two apiece.
Cody Cochran pitched the entire game for the Little Giants, falling to 6-3 for the season with the loss. He gave up four runs on 10 hits and two walks and struck out three batters.
Wabash trailed 2-0 in game two after DePauw scored twice in the fourth inning. The Little Giants responded with a three-run homer from Aldridge in the top of the fifth to push in front 3-2. DePauw responded with two runs in the bottom half of the fifth, then added an insurance run in the seventh.
The Little Giants got a two-out double from Annee in the eighth inning but were unable to move him around the bases.
Tyler Downing started another ninth-inning rally for Wabash with a single to left field, but the Tigers retired the next three Little Giant batters to secure the win.
Wabash picked up ten hits in game two, led by Annee's three-hit performance.
Eric Chavez collected two hits.
Bryan Roberts was saddled with the loss in relief of starter
Kurt Lange. Roberts pitched 2/3 of an inning, giving up one run on three hits with one strikeout. Lange pitched the first three innings of the game. He surrendered one unearned run on five hits and one walk. He struck out three batters before giving way to reliever
Tyler Cooper. walked one batter and gave up one run in one inning of work.
Kevin O'Donnell pitched 1-1/3 innings of scoreless baseball with one strikeout.
Erich Lange game up one run on one hit in one inning of relief work.
Zach Moffett finished the game on the mound for Wabash, giving up one walk and striking out one batter in one inning.
Wabash completes its NCAC regular season schedule Saturday with a two-game set against Denison University. Game one begins at noon.
