Wabash Hits 30 Wins, Advances in Regional Tourney with 8-5 Win Over La Roche

The 2018 Wabash College baseball team became the first squad in school history to post 30 wins in a season on Saturday with an 8-5 win over La Roche College in the elimination bracket of the 2018 NCAA Division III Baseball Mideast Regional in Adrian, Michigan.

The Little Giants improved to 30-16 for the year as well as earning a place as one of the four remaining teams at the eight-team regional to remain. The victory ended the season for La Roche with a final record of 35-10-1.

Wabash scored six runs in the first inning against the 14th-ranked Redhawks. Leadoff batter Sean Roginski singled to right, then moved to second on a single to left by Bryce Aldridge. A sacrifice bunt from Andrew Jumonville put runners at second and third. Jackson Blevins loaded the bases by drawing a walk. Freshman Matthew Annee brought the first two runs home with a double to right field. Eric Chavez put down a bunt on the next at bat that the La Roche starting pitcher threw past first base for an error that allowed Blevins to score. Tyler Downing added a double down the left field line to bring home Chavez and Annee to make it a 5-0 game. Jared Wolfe slammed an RBI single through the right side to add the sixth run of the inning. Roginski collected a second hit as the Little Giants sent 11 batters to the plate in the opening frame.

The six runs were all that freshman starter Sean Smith needed to earn his second win of the season. Smith pitched six innings, scattering eight hits while limiting La Roche to one run in the second inning. He walked two batters and struck out five.

Wabash tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning when Blevins opened the inning with a double and raced home on a single by Henry Wannemuehler. Downing added the final run for the Little Giants, scoring after reaching base on a single, scoring when the Redhawks committed another throwing error.

Kevin O'Donnell took over for Smith in the seventh inning. He held La Roche without a run until the bottom of the ninth. The Redhawks took advantage of a walk, two errors, and two base hits in the final inning to score four runs and cut the lead to three at 83. Zach Moffett entered the game to lock down the victory and give the Little Giants their 30th win of the season.

O'Donnell worked 2-1/3 innings, giving up four hits and two earned runs with a walk and a strikeout. Moffett pitched the final 2/3 of an inning, surrendering a base hit. He finished the game with two strikeouts.

Wabash pounded out 11 hits. Roginski, Blevins, Downing, and Wolfe each had two hits. Annee, Downing, and Wolfe finished the game with two RBI apiece.

The Little Giants advance to Sunday's elimination bracket semifinal game against Ithaca College at noon. The Bombers dropped to the elimination portion of the regional after defeating Shenandoah 7-5 Saturday afternoon. The winner will play the loser between Saturday night's game between Adrian and Wooster at around 3:30 p.m.
