Regional Run Ends For Wabash Baseball With Loss in Championship Game To Wooster

The 2018 NCAA Division III Baseball Mideast Regional run came to end for Wabash College Monday afternoon with a 4-2 loss at the hands of the fifth-ranked College of Wooster Fighting Scots in the championship game of the tournament.

The Little Giants record-setting run came to end with the loss. Wabash set a new high for wins in a season by finishing 32-17. The Little Giants earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament for only the second time in school history after winning the North Coast Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament last weekend, defeating Wooster (40-8) twice in the tourney by scores of 7-3 and 17-8. Wabash finished as Mideast Regional runner-up with wins over national power Marietta College, 14th-ranked La Roche College, an Ithaca College team that has posted 76 consecutive winning seasons, and 25th ranked Adrian College. The only losses in the regional tournament came against Wooster by identical 4-2 scores.

Wabash took a lead in the regional championship game in the fifth inning. Eric Chavez beat out an infield single to start the inning and advanced to second on a throwing error on a failed pickoff attempt. After another infield single by Tyler Downing, Chavez scored on a single to left by Jared Wolfe for a 1-0 Wabash lead.

Wooster took the lead in the sixth inning on a pair of unearned runs against Little Giants starter Cody Cochran. The Scots tacked on one more run in the seventh to take a 3-1 lead before Wabash picked up a run in the eighth inning. The Little Giants drew three walks to load the bases before Chavez drew a two-out walk to cut the lead to 3-2, but could not bring the tying run home in the inning. Wooster answered with another run in bottom of the eighth to stretch the lead back to two.

Henry Wannemuehler opened the ninth inning by being hit by the first pitch off of Wooster reliever Andrew Hill. Hill struck out the next three Little Giants to end the game and the 2018 season for Wabash.

Chavez led the Wabash offense with two of the Little Giants' seven hits in the game. Cochran took the loss to finish the season 8-5. He pitched 6-2/3 innings, allowing seven hits and one earned run with two walks and three strikeouts. Kevin O'Donnell picked up one out on a stolen bases attempt by the Scots in his relief appearance. Sophomore Zach Moffett, who earned a place on the All-Mideast Regional Tournament Team, finished the game for Wabash, pitching one inning of two-hit baseball while giving up one run. Bryce Aldridge and Bryan Roberts joined Moffett as members of the All-Tournament Team.
