Last-Minute Score Sends Wabash To Bell Game Loss

Wabash took a 13-10 lead with 1:36 remaining in Saturday's 126th Monon Bell Classic, but a 62-yard touchdown pass in the final minute of the game gave DePauw a 17-13 victory.

Wabash (7-3, 7-2 NCAC) marched the football to midfield on its first drive of the fourth quarter, only to give the ball away on a fumble. Two plays later the Little Giants took the ball back on a DePauw (6-4, 6-3 NCAC) interception made by Jake Page. Wabash responded with a 13-play drive that stalled at the DePauw 13-yard line to setup a 30-yard Schuyler Nehrig field goal for the three-point lead with 96 seconds left to play in regulation.

The Tigers only needed 58 seconds to take its only lead of the game. DePauw quarterback Chase Andries connected on a 62-yard pass to Gavin Ritter on the fourth play from scrimmage for the four-point lead with 38 seconds remaining in the game. Wabash moved the ball quickly to midfield after the kickoff and eventually advanced it to the DePauw 35-yard line with five seconds on the clock. The final desperation play never developed for Wabash as DePauw recorded its fourth sack of the game to claim the 300-pound locomotive bell for the first time since 2016.

The Little Giants put the first touchdown on the scoreboard on defense in the first quarter. Seth Buresh sacked Andries and knocked the football away and into the hands of lineman David Marsh, who raced 23 yards to give Wabash a 7-0 lead. The Tigers tied the game in the second quarter on a Jarrod Stiver seven-yard run to cap a seven-play, 62-yard drive. Nehrig gave the lead back to Wabash in third period with a 27-yard field goal after an offensive drive stalled at the DePauw 11-yard line. DePauw tied the score at 10-10 early in the fourth quarter on a 28-yard field goal by Jack Brush.

DePauw outgained Wabash by 88 yards of total offense, 289 to 201. Both defenses held the running games in check. Wabash managed only 72 rushing yards on 43 carries. Isaac Avant led the way with 25 rushes for 78 yards. DePauw was held to 79 yards on the ground on 35 attempts. Wabash freshman quarterback Liam Thompson completed 11-of-18 passes for 129 yards. Cooper Sullivan was Thompson's top target with four receptions for 59 yards. Andries finished 16-of-24 passing for 210 yards with the one touchdown and one interception for DePauw. The Little Giants struggled on third-down conversions, moving the sticks on five of 14 tries including 1-of-8 in the first half.

Wabash leads the all-time series against DePauw 62-54-9 with a 43-38-6 edge since the Bell was added to the rivalry in 1932. The loss also dropped the Little Giants into a tie for the 2019 North Coast Athletic Conference with Denison and Wittenberg with both of those teams winning on Saturday to finish with identical 7-2 records in conference play. The conference title is the ninth overall for Wabash. All three teams also tied for the 2018 NCAC title. Wabash earns to NCAC automatic bid to participate in the NCAA Division III Football Playoffs set to begin next Saturday. The Little Giants will learn where they will play when the field of 32 teams is announced on Sunday, November 17, at 5:30 p.m.
