A header after a corner kick in the 20th minute of Wednesday evening's North Coast Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament semifinal match ended the Wabash soccer's team season with a 1-0 loss at Ohio Wesleyan University.
Â
The Little Giants (10-6-3) entered the game as the number-three seed in the tournament. Wabash defeated Ohio Wesleyan (13-4-3), the number two seed in the tourney, by a score of 1-0 at home during the regular season. The Little Giants were unable to put a shot into the net in this contest despite three shots on frame.
Michael Tanchevski,
David Riggs, and
Mitchell Keeling each made shot attempts against OWU goalkeeper Chase Agin, but the Battling Bishops' netminder recorded saves on each try. Ohio Wesleyan put seven shots on goal in the contest against
Chad Wunderlich, who finished the match with four saves. Tanchevski and
Justin Kopp both made team saves on shots by OWU, as well.
Â
Joe Brush provided the game-winning score when he headed the ball into the goal off a corner kick by Hector Gomez. That goal stood up for the remainder of the match to send OWU into Saturday's final against Kenyon College. The top-seeded Lords defeated Oberlin College 5-1 earlier in the afternoon in the other semifinal match.
"We played a solid game tonight," Wabash head coach
Chris Keller said. "Ohio Wesleyan is always very good at home. Give them credit for playing well against us today. We also had enough opportunities to get a goal and tie the game at 1-1. We had a couple of clear chances from six or seven yards away. We just couldn't finish those shots.
"I was a little disappointed we gave up a goal on a set piece. That's something we had not done in over 10 games. But I'm proud of this team and how they played all season long. We accomplished some good things this season like picking up the regular season win against Ohio Wesleyan. I'm excited about the future of the program. The culture is strong. I'm also very proud of these seniors and the way they fought through some ups and downs this season. They were able to lead by example all the way to the very last second of the last game of the season."
Â
Wabash earned a berth in the conference tournament for the fourth consecutive season and fifth overall under Keller. The Little Giants broke the school record for goals-against average for a season with a mark of 0.81 to eclipse the previous record of 0.84 in 2016. Wunderlich also broke the individual goals-against average record. He bettered his own record of 0.84 from last season by finishing with a GAA of 0.76 in 2019.
