Wabash Completes Arizona Trip With Doubleheader Loss to Gustavus Adolphus

The Wabash baseball team closed out its 2019 spring break trip to Arizona Friday afternoon with a doubleheader against Gustavus Adolphus College. The Little Giants lost both games, taking a 5-2 defeat in game followed by a 10-7 loss in the second contest.

Wabash (3-6) took a 2-1 lead after three innings in Friday's opener against the Gusties (5-3). After Gustavus Adolphus scored in the first inning, Wabash answered with an RBI groundout by Andrew Jumonville to drive in Cameron Martin after he led off the inning with a walk. Jumonville added another run in the third with a double to drive in Jackson Blevins after his one-out walk.

The Gusties regained the lead with two runs in the fourth before adding insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings to claim the victory.

Sean Smith took the loss for the Little Giants. He pitched four innings, allowing three earned runs on four hits along with three walks. Dylan Scheid pitched two innings of relief and gave up one run on one hit with one strikeout. Parker Noll pitched the final inning for Wabash and gave up one run on one hit.

Jumonville collected two of Wabash's seven hits in game one to go with two RBI. Matthew Annee, Erich Lange, Eric Chavez, Jared Wolfe, and Henry Wannemuehler added one hit apiece.

Wabash fell behind quickly in game two, trailing 9-0 before mounting a rally. The Little Giants pushed three runs across the plate in the fourth inning on an RBI double by Jumonville. Canton Terry launched his first career home run for a two-run blast that cut the Gusties' lead to 9-3.

The Little Giants drew even closer in the sixth inning. Annee opened the frame with a single and scored on a double by Terry for his third RBI of the game. Wabash loaded the bases, then scored three runs on consecutive walks to make the score 9-7 in favor of Gustavus Adolphus. The Gusties finally ended the Wabash threat before adding another run in the bottom of the sixth to claim the three-run victory.

Kase Lawson suffered the loss. He gave up five runs (two earned) on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Tyler Dearing, Logan Butrum, Zach Moffett, and Kevin O'Donnell all pitched in relief for the Little Giants.

Terry finished with three of Wabash's 11 hits in game two. Jackson Blevins picked up two hits and one RBI. Annee added two hits and collected one RBI. Eric Chavez also recorded a pair of hits for Wabash. Chase Clarkson and Martin each had a base hit for the Little Giants, as well.

Wabash will return to Indiana to prepare for its home opener against Hanover College next weekend. The Little Giants are scheduled to play the Panthers in a doubleheader at Goodrich Ballpark on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. The two teams will complete the three-game series on Sunday with a single game at 1 p.m.
