Freshman
Austin Simmers delivered a one-out single to right field with the bases loaded in the tenth inning Sunday to give Wabash a 6-5 victory over Oberlin and a two-game sweep of the visiting Yeomen. The Little Giants took game one from Oberlin with a 17-12 win.
Â
Erich Lange and
Sean Roginski were the heroes in the game one victory for Wabash (17-14, 5-6 NCAC). Lange tied the Wabash single-game record for hits by going 5-for-5 at the plate. He belted a three-run home run to left field in the second inning as part of seven total RBI in the game, tying for the second-most in a single game for a Little Giant. Roginski added two hits and one RBI, becoming only the second player in Wabash history to collect more than 200 hits in a career. Roginski has 201 total hits and trails all-time hits leader Chris Deig who finished with 206 career hits from 2009-2012.
Â
Wabash trailed Oberlin (12-15, 4-8 NCAC) 7-0 in game one before Lange's blast to left field to cut the score to 7-3. The Little Giants erupted for seven runs in the third inning. Lange singled home the first run. Wabash loaded the bases, scoring a run when
Eric Chavez was hit by a pitch. Simmers drew a walk to cut the lead to 7-6.
Jared Wolfe tied the game with another walk, followed by a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Jackson Blevins for an 8-7 Wabash lead. Roginski singled home another run ahead of a sacrifice fly by
Canton Terry to complete the scoring and provide the Little Giants a 10-7 lead.
Â
Wabash tacked on two more runs in the fifth on a
Matthew Annee double. Oberlin responded with two runs in the top of the sixth inning, but the Little Giants scored three in the bottom half frame on a three-run double by Lange. Blevins picked up an RBI double in the seventh and Lange added the final run for the Little Giants when he scored on a wild pitch in the eighth inning. Oberlin scored three runs in the ninth inning before Erik Lakomek came in the game in relief and secured the final out of the game by retiring the only batter he faced.
Â
Logan Butrum earned his second win of the season, pitching 4-1/3 innings of relief. He allowed two runs on five hits and one walk with two strikeouts.
Eric Murphy held Oberlin to three runs on three hits and two walks in 2-2/3 innings of relief pitching. He struck out four batters.
Â
Wabash trailed in game two 1-0 before Blevins singled home Chavez in the third inning to even the score at 1-1. The Little Giants took a 3-1 lead in the fourth on a single by Chavez and a sacrifice fly by Simmers. Oberlin tied the score with a pair of runs in the fifth inning then moved in front with a run in the sixth. Wabash regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth on another home run by Lange, this time a solo shot to the top of the hill in left center field. Chavez picked up an RBI double to provide a 5-4 lead.
Â
The Yeomen tied the game in the seventh with a run off reliever
Zach Moffett. Moffett pitched 2-2/3 innings, giving up two runs on four hits and two walks.
Tyler Dearing started the game and allowed three runs on three hits with six walks and five strikeouts.
Â
The Little Giants turned to Lakomek on the mound in relief in the eighth inning. The sophomore pitched three scoreless innings with one strikeout. Only one batter reached base against Lakomek in the game and that came on an error in the top of the tenth inning.
Wabash threatened to end the game in the ninth inning. Simmers led off the inning with a single to center. A sacrifice bunt moved him to second before a fielder's choice put runners at first and second with two outs. Annee singled to right field, but Oberlin's Jacob Thompson made a perfect throw to the plate to cut down the potential winning run.
Â
Lange drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the tenth inning and moved to second on a wild pitch.
Cameron Martin added a walk to put runners at first and second. A walk to Chavez loaded the bases for Wabash. Simmers followed with the single to right that fell in front of Thompson and allowed Lange to score the winning run and complete the two-game Easter Sunday sweep.
Â
Lange finished the series 7-of-9 from the plate to hit .778 with eight RBI, three doubles, and two home runs. Annee added four hits in two games, while Terry, Blevins, and
Andrew Jumonville each collected three hits in the series. Â Lakomek earned the win in game two to improve to 2-0 for the season.
Â
The two victories moved Wabash past Oberlin in the North Coast Athletic Conference standings and into seventh place in the standings, a half-game behind Wittenberg and Kenyon. The Little Giants have a non-conference game against Anderson scheduled for Wednesday, April 24, at home beginning at 4 p.m. before a four-game home NCAC series over the coming weekend. Wabash will play two games against Hiram College on Saturday before playing rival DePauw University on Sunday, April 28.
