The lights went out both figuratively and literally Thursday night on the 2019 Wabash College baseball season in a 4-1 loss by the Little Giants to Allegheny in the first elimination game of the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.
Â
Wabash (21-19) rallied from a 2-1 deficit after rain delayed the start of the game against the Gators (22-16). A power outage in the middle of a pitch in the seventh inning added another 27-minute delay to a three-hour long game that ended after midnight.
Â
Allegheny took the lead in the first inning on a leadoff triple and wild pitch brought Austin Bristol home for a 1-0 lead for the Gators. Bristol scored again in the third inning for a 2-0 Allegheny lead.
Â
The Little Giants were held hitless until the fifth inning when
Austin Simmers hit a two-out single.
Erich Lange picked up the first of three consecutive singles in the seventh inning, scoring after base hits by
Eric Chavez and
Andrew Jumonville to cut the lead to 2-1.
Â
The Gators scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on a single up the middle off reliever
Zach Moffett, who pitched 3-1/3 innings of relief. He scattered three hits and three walks and gave up two runs. Moffett struck out five batters.
Â
Tyler Dearing took the loss in his final start of the year. He held Allegheny to two hits and one run after surrendering the leadoff triple. Dearing also struck out five batters over four innings on the mound with three walks.
Sean Smith closed out the game for Wabash without allowing a base runner in 2/3 of an inning of work.
Â
Wabash ended the 2019 campaign with its third consecutive 20-win season. The senior members of the team leave as the winningest group in the history of the baseball program with a total of 92 wins over four seasons with a school-record 32 wins and a 2018 NCAC Tournament championship along with NCAA regional runner-up honors. The Little Giants earned back-to-back conference tournament appearances in 2018 and 2019 for the first time since earning trips in 2010 and 2011.
