Watson's Second Half Sends Wabash To Home Win Over Oberlin

Tyler Watson scored 14 second-half points to lift Wabash to an 81-61 victory over Oberlin College Saturday afternoon in North Coast Athletic Conference basketball.

The Little Giants (8-5, 4-2 NCAC), playing their first home game since December 4, held a seven-point halftime lead thanks in part to a 20-point effort from Jack Davidson over the first 20 minutes of the game. Davidson finished with a game-high 25 points. Wabash took a pair of 10-point leads in the opening period before Oberlin (8-5, 2-4 NCAC) cut that lead to one point with 1:50 remaining in the half on a three-point basket by Wolf Moser. Davidson caught fire in the closing minutes of the half, scoring eight points in the final 1:30 to guide Wabash to the 40-33 advantage at the break.

Watson started his second-half scoring with a jumper in the lane followed by a three-point basket to put Wabash up 45-34. He scored two more three-point baskets over the next two minutes to extend the Little Giants' lead to 15 points. Colten Garland added a three-pointer as part of his season-high 13-point effort to push the advantage to 17 points after an Oberlin free throw by Joshua Friedkin with 14:40 remaining in the game.

Kellen Schreiber scored with 13:03 left to play in the game to push the Little Giants' lead to 19 points at 59-37. Oberlin got no closer than 13 points after that, drawing that close on two different occasions before Wabash raced out to its largest lead at 23 points with 1:23 left in the game before settling for the 20-point victory.

Davidson moved past Charlie Bowerman and Andrew Zimmer into 11th place on the Wabash career scoring list with a total of 1,386 points in his 65th career game as a Little Giant.

Wabash shot 50-percent from the field on 25-of-50 shooting. The Little Giants connected on 10-of-22 three-point tries (45.5 percent) and hit 21-of-30 free throw attempts (70 percent). Wabash limited Oberlin to 8-of-26 shooting from three-point range and outrebounded the Yeomen 38-31. The Little Giants committed a season-low seven turnovers.

Friedkin led Oberlin in scoring with 14 points. Andre Campbell added 10 points for the Yeomen.

Wabash travels to Springfield, Ohio, Wednesday evening to play at second-ranked Wittenberg University. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
