Wabash Rallies For Season-Opening Win At Centre

Wabash opened the 2021-2022 basketball season with a come-from-behind 74-70 victory on the road at Centre College.

Four Little Giant players scored in double figures in the opener. Senior Tyler Watson led the way with 27 points. Kellen Schreiber added 15 points. Edreece Redmond came off the bench to score 11 points. Ahmoni Jones scored 10 points. 

Wabash (1-0) led by as many as 10 points in the first half. Centre (0-1) outscored the Little Giants 26-13 over the final 10 minutes of the first half to take a 34-31 lead into the locker room at halftime. 

The Colonels expanded their lead to 14 points over the first four minutes of the second period. Watson scored five points in a one-minute stretch to bring Wabash to within six points. Redmond picked up nine points over a two-minute span to bring the Little Giants back to within a point of Centre.

Wabash kept the Colonels' lead at one basket until Jack Davidson connected on a three-point basket to give Wabash its first lead of the second half at 68-67 with 3:24 remaining in the game. Watson followed with a layup to stretch the lead to three points. 

Redmond added his final basket with less than two minutes on the game clock to put Wabash in front 72-68. Jones was fouled to stop the clock and connected on a pair of free throws for a six-point lead with nine seconds left to play. Centre hit a basket just before time expired to provide the final four-point margin. 

Wabash shot 41.9 percent from the field (29-of-62). The Little Giants hit eight three-point shots (29.6 percent) and 14-of-17 free throws (82.4 percent). Centre finished 26-of-63 from the field (41.3 percent) but made only four of 21 three-point tries (19 percent). 

Watson led the Little Giants with nine of the team's 36 rebounds. He also handed out five assists in the game. 

Four Centre players also scored in double figures led by the 22-point effort of RJ Smith. Carter Baugman scored 20 points. Dustin Gerald finished with 12 points. Chez Moore scored 11 points.

Wabash plays its home opener Wednesday night against Hanover College in a 7 p.m. contest.
