Wabash Completes Two-Game Sweep Of Wittenberg

The Wabash College basketball team completed a two-game sweep of Wittenberg University when the Little Giants traveled to Springfield, Ohio Sunday afternoon and departed with a 76-74 victory over the Tigers.

Wabash (3-2) claimed the two-point road victory 24 hours after blasting Wittenberg (0-2) by 29 points at home on Saturday. The Little Giants fought back from an early four-point deficit in Sunday's contest to claim their first road victory of the 2021 season and the first regular season series sweep of Wittenberg since 2010.

The Tigers grabbed an early lead in the back-and-forth contest Sunday and took a four-point lead to the locker room at halftime at 27-23. Wabash rode a 10-0 scoring run to begin the second half behind baskets by Kellen Schreiber and Reis Thomas along with free throws from Schreiber and Tyler Watson. The free throw line proved to be very charitable to Wabash on the afternoon. The Little Giants attempted 33 free throws and hit 26 for 78.8 percent. The host Tigers only took 14 free throw attempts, hitting 11 to finish at 78.6 percent shooting for the game.

Wabash took the six-point lead 2-1/2 minutes into the second half thanks to its scoring run and never trailed again. The Tigers cut the lead to one point at 44-43 with 11:01 remaining before free throws by Ahmoni Jones boosted the advantage back to three points. The Tigers trimmed the lead to a single point three more times before another scoring run --- this time an 11-4 spread --- pushed the Wabash lead to its largest of the game at eight points, 62-54, with 6:12 remaining in the game.

The Little Giants held off a final run by Wittenberg in the closing minutes by connecting on 7-of-10 free throw attempts. The Tigers hit a last-second three-point shot with Wabash in front by five to close the margin to two points in the final box score.
