Late Goal Lifts Wabash To Win At Anderson

AJ Shaheen scored his third goal in the closing minutes of Wednesday evening's lacrosse game between Wabash and Anderson to give the Little Giants an 11-10 victory and improve to 2-0 for the season.

Shaheen, the North Coast Athletic Conference Men's Lacrosse Athlete of the Week, laced an unassisted goal with 1:21 remaining in the match to provide the difference-maker over the Ravens (0-2).

Shaheen started the scoring with his first goal two minutes into the contest. Joseph Plencner added his first goal midway through the first period to give Wabash a 2-1 lead. Anderson responded with three goals to move in front 4-2 before answers from Caulin Fitzgerald and Ethan Stonis evened the score at 4-4.

Another goal from Shaheen, two from Plencner, and a second by both Fitzgerald and Stonis put the Little Giants in front 9-5. Cole Whaley brought the Ravens back to within a goal by scoring three consecutive times to cut the lead to 9-8.

Plencner ended the Anderson rally with his fourth goal of the night in the final four minutes of the game. A quick goal by the Ravens cut the advantage to one before Shaheen found the back of the net for the final time for the game winner. The Ravens added a goal with 10 seconds left to provide the final scoring differential.

Plencner's four goals paced the offense for Wabash. Shaheen scored three times, while Fitzgerald and Stonis each added two goals. Stonis, Shaheen, and AJ Rogers each tallied one assist.

John Frey earned his second win of the season in goal for Wabash. He made 10 saves while facing a total of 35 shots and 20 shots on goal. Evan Schiefelbein, AJ Miller, and Cody Bevelhimer added two caused turnovers apiece for the Little Giants on defense. Schiefelbein grabbed a team-best 12 ground balls in the game.

Tanner Simmons won 11 faceoffs for Wabash. The Little Giants finished the game 12-of-24 at the dot.

Wabash opens the home portion of its season next Friday against Earlham College. The opening faceoff on March 12 is set for 4 p.m.
