Wabash Drops Game One At Witt; Second Game Postponed

Wabash lost a 4-1 baseball game at Wittenberg Saturday afternoon before the second game of the North Coast Athletic Conference West Division doubleheader was suspended due to weather.

Wabash (18-13, 9-6 NCAC West) trailed 2-0 after the host Tigers (18-7, 7-4 NCAC West) scored a pair of runs in the second inning. Austin Simmers picked up a one-out double in the third inning and scored on an RBI single by AJ Reid to cut the Wittenberg lead in half. Wittenberg scored two more runs in the bottom of the third to add to its lead. Wabash could not mount a threat over the final four innings. The Little Giants were held to two hits in their final 14 at bats.

Simmers and Reid both collected two hits with Blake Juerling adding a fifth for Wabash in the game. Tavic Simmons took the loss after pitching three innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits and two walks. Tyler Dearing pitched the final three innings in relief and held Wittenberg to two hits and four walks with three strikeouts.

The Little Giants trailed 4-3 in the third inning of game two when rain forced the contest to be postponed. No date has been scheduled at this time to complete the seven-inning game.

Wabash dropped to third in the latest NCAC West standings with a .600 winning percentage. Wittenberg moved past the Little Giants into second place with a .636 winning percentage. Denison, with an 8-3 West Division record after defeating DePauw 13-4 on Saturday, holds the top spot in the division. Denison's second game with DePauw was postponed to Sunday afternoon due to rain.

Wabash is scheduled to play a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday, May 1 at Washington University in St. Louis beginning at 12 p.m. CDT.
