Wabash swept both games of Saturday's home doubleheader against DePauw University in dramatic fashion. The Little Giants rallied to tie game two in the seventh inning and scored on a walk-off sacrifice fly in the eighth to claim an 8-7 victory in game one. Wabash used a pair of four-run innings in Saturday's opener to claim a 10-2 win.
Â
Wabash (10-8, 3-1 NCAC West) trailed DePauw (8-10, 1-3 NCAC West) by a score of 7-4 headed into the Little Giants' final schedule at bats in the bottom of the seventh inning. Pinch hitter
Drew Prather started a three-run rally with a single.
Andrew Jumonville doubled pinch-runner
Reece Bauer to third before an error on the next at bat by
AJ Reid sent Bauer home. Reid was initially called out at first, but an appeal by Wabash overturned the call and put runners on the corners with one out.
Â
Cole Vassilo brought in the second run of the inning with a single through the right side to cut the lead to 7-6 in favor of DePauw. A fielder's choice by
Liam Patton loaded the bases for
Sean Smith. The senior was hit by a pitch to drive in the game-tying run and force extra innings.
Â
Reliever
Jacob Bishop retired the first two DePauw batters in the top of the eighth inning before giving up a hit batsman. He forced the final Tiger hitter to fly out to right to bring Wabash to the plate.
Â
Freshman outfielder Kamden Early opened the bottom of the eighth with a double to right field.
Austin Simmers' sacrifice bunt moved Early to third. DePauw intentionally walked Jumonville to bring the freshman Reid to the plate. The Wabash shortstop lifted a fly ball to deep centerfield that was caught, but easily allowed Early to score with the final run to give the Little Giants the 8-7 win.
Â
Wabash had trailed 3-0 early in the second game before putting together a four-run third inning. Jumonville drove in one run in the inning ahead of a two-run double to left-center field by Reid to plate Jumonville and Simmers. Vassilo followed with another double to right center to bring home Reid and give Wabash a 4-3 lead.
Â
DePauw regained the lead with a three-run fourth inning and added another run in the seventh prior to the late-inning heroics by the Little Giants.
Â
Reid finished the game with four RBI for Wabash. Jumonville and Vassilo each collected two hits. Vassilo also drove in a pair of runs. Bishop earned his first win of the season in relief. He pitched two innings, allowing just one hit and one walk along with the hit batsman. He struck out two batters.
Â
Wabash scored 10 runs on 14 hits in the first game against DePauw with the biggest blow coming on a three-run homer by
Sean Smith in the fifth inning to blow the game open. Smith went 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and three RBI. He led off the third inning with a double and scored the Little Giants' first run on an RBI single by Simmers. Smith walked and score a run as part of the four-run fourth for Wabash. Simmers added an RBI single in that inning as part of a 3-for-4 effort at the plate.
Â
Erik Lakomek earned the win in relief for Wabash. He pitched 3-1/3 innings, allowing only one run on one hit with one walk and one strikeout.
Â
The two wins Saturday gives Wabash a 3-1 NCAC series win over DePauw and a 4-2 overall series lead this season.
Â
Wabash will face the NCAC West Division leader, Denison University, in a four-game series in the coming week. The series begins on Wednesday with two games at Goodrich Ballpark beginning at 1 p.m. before moving to Granville, Ohio for the final two games on Saturday.
