Little Giants Celebrate Senior Day With 3-2 Win Over Grinnell

Wabash honored seven of its senior members of the 2021 Little Giant soccer team Sunday afternoon prior to its match versus visiting Grinnell College. Wabash got a late goal to claim a 3-2 victory.

Wabash (6-2) honored Cristian Aleman, Adam Berg, Emiliano Delgado, Timothy Herring, Joseph Kaefer, Nathan Ooley, and Josh Scott before the match.  Once play began, the Little Giants took a 1-0 lead when Austin Hughes fired a shot on goal. The attempt was saved but the rebound found the foot of Alexis Delgado who hammered home his second goal of the season.

Grinnell (3-4) evened the score at 1-1 minutes before the end of the first half when Jasper Yang notched his team-leading sixth goal of the season. Wabash regained the lead five minutes into the second period. A perfect set of passes from Adam Berg and Coledon Johnson led to a goal by Hughes from the left side for his third of the season and a 2-1 Wabash lead.

Yang added a second goal in the 67th minute to even the score again. Wabash put the match away in the 80th minute on another saved shot rebound. This time it was Hughes who fired a shot on goal of a pass from Johnson that was tipped away by the Grinnel goalkeeper. Mitchell Keeling blasted the ball into the back of the net for his second goal of the season and the eventual game-winner.

Hughes scored a total of four points in the match with a goal and two assists. Johnson picked up two assists, as well. Michael Bertram recorded a pair of saves in goal for Wabash to earn the win. The Little Giants outshot Grinnell 11-8 overall and put eight shots on net compared to four for the Pioneers.

The Little Giants complete their non-conference schedule Wednesday with a 7:30 p.m. match at Mount St. Joseph University.
