Wabash Sweeps Doubleheader With Manchester

The Wabash baseball team snapped its six-game losing streak by winning a pair of games against Manchester University Tuesday evening in Kokomo, Indiana. The Little Giants defeated the Spartans 6-4 in game one before completing the sweep with a 7-2 victory in game two of the seven-inning doubleheader.

Wabash (14-8) trailed Manchester (5-16) by a score of 1-0 through two innings before erupting for a three-run third. Kamden Earley reached base after being hit by a pitch to start the third inning. Sophomore shortstop AJ Reid gave the Little Giants a 2-1 when he smacked a two-run home run for his first of the season. Felix Valero drove in another run in the inning with an RBI single to score Julian Rutherford from second.

Manchester regained the lead by scoring a run in the fourth and two more in the sixth to move in front 4-3. The Little Giants manufactured a pair of runs to tie the game in the top of the seventh. Adam Oxley drove in the first run of the inning with an RBI single after Wabash loaded the bases with two singles with runners advancing on a passed ball and a wild pitch. A walk by Evan Neukam loaded the bases for Oxley who singled home the tying run. A second run scored on an error by the Manchester left fielder, allowing Neukam to move to third base. Valero provided an insurance run with a sacrifice fly to score Neukam for the 6-4 lead.

Tavic Simmons gave up a lead-off single in the bottom of the seventh but induced a double-play ground ball and struck out the final batter of the game to earn his fourth win of the season. Simmons worked two innings of relief, allowing only one hit without giving up a run. Robbie Manuzzi started the game for Wabash and pitched five innings. He scattered seven hits and two walks and allowed three earned runs while striking out three batters.

Reid and Camden Scheidt paced the Little Giants' offense with two hits apiece. Reid also drove in two runs.

Wabash scored early and often in game two. Reid drove in the first run of the game with an RBI ground out to score Austin Simmers from third after the senior doubled and raced to third on a wild pitch to open the bottom of the first inning. The Little Giants added five more runs in the second inning on RBI singles by Simmers and Earley. Michael Galanos scored the third run of the inning on a passed ball, then Simmers scored on another passed ball after a walk to Reid loaded the bases. Nick Logan was hit by a pitch after a walk to Neukam loaded the bases again to plate the final run of the inning, putting Wabash in front 6-0.

The Little Giants added one more run in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Oxley after Manchester scored a run in the third and another in the fourth.

Simmers finished the game with three hits to lead the Little Giants at the plate.

Starter Braeden Bryant earned his second victory of the season on the mound. He pitched four innings of four-hit baseball and limited Manchester to two runs. He walked three and struck out four batters. Grant Stratton pitched 2-1/3 innings of relief, holding the Spartans scoreless while allowing only one hit. He struck out two batters. Jacob Cox worked the final 2/3 of an inning, allowing only one hit to go with one strikeout.

Wabash will play Wittenberg University on Thursday at Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana, in a makeup game from the two teams' earlier season scheduled doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
