Little Giants Break Total Offense Record In 67-18 Win At Kenyon

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Wabash broke the school record for total offense in a game by amassing 776 total yards in Saturday's 67-18 North Coast Athletic Conference victory at Kenyon College.

Wabash (5-2, 4-1 NCAC) ran for a season-high 413 yards and five touchdowns with three players over 100 rushing yards individually. The Little Giants threw for a season-best 363 yards and four scores.

The 776-yard effort eclipsed the previous record of 711 yards against Denison in 2000. The 416 rushing yards are the sixth-most in program history.

Liam Thompson completed 30-of-39 passes for 354 yards, moving him past former Kenyon (1-6, 1-4 NCAC) quarterback Thomas Merkle for second place on the NCAC career passing list with 10,428 yards. Thompson trails conference career passing leader Mason Espinosa from Ohio Wesleyan University with 11,559 yards.

Wabash scored early and often in the first half versus the Owls. Thompson connected with All-American tight end Penn Stoller for an eight-yard touchdown pass to put the Little Giants in front 6-0 four minutes into the game. Thompson hit Stoller with a five-yard TD strike less than five minutes later to put Wabash up 12-0. Stoller added a 23-yard TD catch in the second quarter for his third of the game, matching his single-game best effort.

Sophomore Xavier Tyler gave Wabash a 19-0 lead with a nine-yard touchdown run. He finished the game with seven carries for 119 yards and two scores for his second career 100-yard game. Tyler's second score came on an 81-yard scamper for a touchdown that put Wabash in front 57-6.

Conner Grimes scored on the next offensive possession for Wabash with a 75-yard run while tight-roping the sideline for the touchdown. Grimes ran for a team-best 137 yards on seven carries. Cade Campbell was the third Wabash back to top 100 rushing yards, finishing with 114 on eight carries. Campbell scored on a 48-yard run to start the third quarter. Thompson scored the fifth rushing touchdown on an 11-yard run in the second quarter.

Thompson added a six-yard scoring strike to Derek Allen Jr. for the fourth TD of the game through the air for the Little Giants. Allen, Jr. caught seven passes for 91 yards and one score. Stoller led the Little Giants with nine receptions for 113 yards. Cooper Sullivan joined Stoller as a 100-yard receiver with seven catches for 112 yards. Nine different Wabash players caught passes in the lop-sided victory.

While the Wabash offense was racking up huge numbers, the Little Giants' defense kept Kenyon's potent running game in check. The Owls came into the game averaging 192 rushing yards per game, the third-best total among conference teams. Wabash limited Kenyon to 80 yards and one touchdown on 29 carries. Kenyon's sophomore running back Jordon Benjamin averaged 99 yards a game starting the day but has held to 59 rushing yards on 18 attempts. Kenyon quarterbacks Henry Wendorf and Park Penrod combined for 198 yards and two scores but also threw two interceptions for the only turnovers in the game. Ben Netting picked off one pass. Alex Ziats added another pick on a deflected pass by Drew Foster. Jordan Cree led the Little Giants with six tackles. Vaughn Taylor and Brock Robertson made five tackles apiece.
