Turnovers Send Wabash To Home-Opening Loss To Anderson

Wabash committed 13 turnovers that Anderson University converted into 21 points in the Little Giants' 72-67 loss Tuesday evening at Chadwick Court to the visiting Ravens.

The early-season matchup between the two favorites to win their respective conferences was close throughout. Wabash (1-1) took an 11-point lead in the first six minutes of the opening half before Anderson (2-0) regrouped. The Ravens outscored Wabash 22-5 to take a 29-23 lead over the next seven minutes, including a 6:13 scoreless stretch for the Little Giants. Anderson stretched its lead to as many as nine points in the opening period before senior Ahmoni Jones scored nine of his game-high 24 points over the final three minutes of the opening half to cut Anderson's lead to two points at 38-36 at the half.

Jones shot 8-of-9 from the field in the opening 20 minutes to score 19 points with three assists and three rebounds.

Wabash came out of the locker room on fire, scoring the first nine points of the period to take a 47-38 lead with 15:42 remaining. The Ravens whittled the advantage back down to two points at 52-50 midway through the final half and stayed within two scores of the Little Giants before a three-point basket by Tate Ivanyo tied the score at 57-57 with 7:46 left to play.

The two teams traded baskets before Ivanyo tallied another triple to put Anderson up 64-61. Sam Comer answered with a pull-up jumper to cut the lead to one point, but the Ravens scored the following five points to move in front 69-63 with 2:32 left to play. Styles McCorkle scored a pair of free throws to cut the lead back to four points, but Elijah Mattingly and Bryson Huckeby added free throws to stretch the advantage back to six points in the final minute. Gavin Schippert scored with 24 seconds remaining to draw Wabash to within four points, followed by a forced turnover by the Little Giants' defense to provide a chance to get within a basket in the closing seconds. But a Wabash turnover on the inbound pass, the 13th and final of the game, led to a free throw by Jordan Gadis to put the game away and send Wabash to its first loss of the season.

Jones led the Little Giants with 24 points and finished 10-of-15 from the field. Vinny Buccilla added 11 points. Schippert chipped in eight points and grabbed a team-best nine rebounds. Wabash outrebounded Anderson 42-39 for the contest.

Four Ravens scored in double figures, led by Huckeby with 16 points. Ivanyo and Cam Smith each scored 15 points. Mattingly finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Wabash travels to Jacksonville, Illinois, this weekend to compete in the Bill Merris Tournament at Illinois College. The Little Giants face 21st-ranked North Park at 5:30 p.m. CST.
