Wabash nearly doubled its offensive output in the second half of Saturday's North Coast Athletic Conference basketball game at Oberlin. The Little Giants scored 47 points over the final 20 minutes to win 76-70 over the host Yeomen.
Wabash (6-2, 2-0 NCAC) was limited to 29 points in the opening period and made only 10 of 30 shot attempts. Six of the Little Giants' baskets came from beyond the three-point range. Wabash shot better from long range in the opening half on 6 of 17, shooting from behind the arc for 35.3 percent. Wabash shot 33.3 percent on 10 of 30 in the half.
Oberlin (4-5, 0-2 NCAC) took the lead early on a three-point JJ Gray basket.
Sam Comer answered for Wabash with a basket to cut the lead to one point before
Gavin Schippert hit a three-pointer. The shot put Wabash up 5-3.
Wabash led by as many as ten points when
Randy Kelley drained a three-pointer with 7:19 left in the opening period. Oberlin rallied to erase that lead, tying the score at 28-28 with 1:12 left in the first period. The Yeomen took a one-point lead on a free throw from Gray.
Nate Matelic answered with a free throw to tie the score at 29-29 entering the break.
Neither team led by more than one possession until
Ahmoni Jones scored five consecutive points to give the Little Giants a 46-42 lead with 12:17 on the clock. Matelic added a basket midway through the second half for a six-point advantage before Oberlin answered to draw within two points at 50-48.
Wabash went on a 19-9 scoring run over the next five minutes for a 69-57 lead with 2:55 left to play. Andrew Gannon and Yuuki Okubo scored the next six points for the Yeomen to bring Oberlin within six points, but two free throws from Jones put Wabash back in front 71-63 with less than a minute remaining. The Yeomen got as close as four points with 12 seconds left to play, but two free throws from
Rich Brooks and Comer pushed the advantage back to eight points. The Yeomen hit a buzzer-beater to make the final score 76-70.
Brooks led the Little Giants in scoring, coming off the bench to tally 20 points on 7 of 13 shooting. Jones scored 11 points, all coming in the second half. Kelley and Matelic each added ten points.
Gray paced Oberlin with 27 points. Okubo added 21 points for the Yeomen.
Wabash finished the game shooting 25 of 58 overall for 43 percent by shooting 53.6 percent in the second half. The Little Giant bench outscored Oberlin 39-7. Wabash turned nine Oberlin turnovers into 12 points for the game.
Wabash returns to action on Wednesday with a home conference game against Kenyon College.
