Wabash Plays Point-For-Point With Mount Union In 3-1 MCVL Loss

Volk Breaks Four-Set Kills Record; Little Giants Only Second MCVL Team To Take Set From The Purple Raiders

The Wabash College volleyball team matched the University of Mount Union point for point in Saturday's Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League match. The Little Giants could not knock off the national powerhouse from Ohio in a 3-1 home loss at Chadwick Court.

Wabash (8-17, 0-5 MCVL) scored a win in the second set to claim the first set from the visiting Purple Raiders (18-5, 6-1 MCVL) in the last four league contests. Mount Union had won its previous three MCVL matches by 3-0 scores before the second-set win by the Little Giants. Mount Union received two votes in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association poll and was ranked 13th this year. The Little Giants played four close matches in the 25-19, 27-29, 25-17, and 25-18 loss despite a .349 hitting percentage by Mount Union in the match.

The Purple Raiders won the first set 25-19. Wabash played to eight ties in the opener, matching Mount Union as late as 17-17 in the match. The Purple Raiders ran off the next two points before Patrick Volk recorded one of his team-high five kills in the set to bring Wabash back to within a point at 19-18. Mount Union rolled off three more points before answering a Little Giant score with the last three points of the set.

Wabash got seven kills from Volk and six from Ricky Sessions in a 29-27 win for the Little Giants. The two squads traded service errors to open the set before exchanging blows in a set that featured 14 ties and five lead changes. Wabash claimed a 7-4 lead in the second. The teams matched points before a Mount Union rally evened the score at 20-20.

Wabash scored back-to-back points for the 22-20 lead, but Mount Union answered to even the score at 22-22. The teams exchanged scores again to tie the set at 25-25. Wabash took advantage of an attack error by the Purple Raiders to move in front 26-25, but Mount Union responded with a kill to tie the score for the 13th time. Wabash took another lead on a kill by Volk, but the Purple Raiders tied the score at 27-27 with a kill. Volk scored his seventh kill of the set to put the Little Giants up a point before an attack error after a serve from Julian Alvizo gave Wabash the 29-27 win and tied the match score at 1-1.

Mount Union showed in the third set why it's receiving votes from the national coaches by taking the third set 25-17 after trailing 2-1. The Purple Raiders finished with a 25-18 win in the final set to claim the 3-1 victory.

Volk broke the Wabash four-set record by recording 26 kills. Session held the four-set record with 24 kills two weeks ago against Fontbonne in league play. Volk finished the day with a .388 attack percentage. Sessions added ten kills in the match for the Little Giants. Will Beikes recorded 41 assists on 100 chances for a .410 percentage. Zachary Small paced Wabash with a team-best 15 digs.

Wabash will look to rebound tomorrow with a Sunday afternoon MCVL match against Baldwin Wallace, with the first serve set for 2 p.m.
