Little Giants Lose Late Lead To Denison In Tourney Opener

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio -- Wabash held a 5-2 lead through six innings over number-one seed and 11th-ranked Denison in the 2023 North Coast Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament's opening game Thursday afternoon. The Little Giants could not hold the advantage in a 9-5 loss to the Big Red.

Wabash (24-17) scored a run in the second and added four runs in the third, with the senior first baseman delivering the big blow with a three-run double to left-center field. Brayden Lentz led the Little Giants offensively, going 2-for-4 in the ballgame with a double and three RBI. Sophomore Camden Scheidt finished 3-for-5 with a triple. Senior Liam Patton chipped in, going 3-for-5 for Wabash with an RBI.

Freshman Jackson Woehr (4-1) came out of the bullpen for Wabash and took the loss. Senior Jacob Bishop started for the Little Giants, pitching five innings while giving up two runs, one earned, on five hits, with five walks and four strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Little Giants took the early lead off when sophomore Will Phillips scored a run in the second inning.

The Little Giants offense exploded for four runs the next inning, highlighted by a three-run double off the bat of Lentz, which brought the Little Giants lead to 5-0. Top-seeded Denison (32-8) scored single runs in the fourth and sixth innings before taking the lead with a five-run seventh inning. The Big Red tacked on two more runs to take a four-run lead into the ninth to secure the win.
