Volleyball Scores Four-Set Win In Home Opener

The Wabash College volleyball won its 2024 home opener Wednesday evening with a 3-1 victory over Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College at Chadwick Court.
 
Wabash (3-1) won the opening set 25-20 behind Patrick Volk's three kills and two apiece from BawiBawi Thang and Jackson Leeper. The Little Giants posted five blocks on defense in the opening set, with Leeper blocking two kill attempts by the visiting Pomeroys (2-1) in the first set. Will Beikes picked up seven of his match-best 37 assists in the opening set to help the Little Giants to the five-point win.
 
SMWC rallied in the second set to claim a 25-22 victory and even the overall score at 1-1. Leeper posted four kills in the set, and Beikes gave out 11 assists. The Little Giants battled back and forth, forcing 12 ties and four lead changes in the set before the Pomeroys claimed a 21-20 lead on a Wabash service error before winning the set 25-22.
 
Wabash responded by leading from start to finish in the third set for a 25-21 victory. Volk led the offensive attack with five kills. Thang, Leeper, and Ricky Sessions each recorded two kills for Wabash. Beikes gave out ten assists to put the Little Giants one set away from claiming the overall victory.
 
The fourth set got off to a rocky start for Wabash. The Little Giants trailed throughout the early going until tying the score at 17-17 on a service error by the Pomeroys. Wabash scored the following three points to move in front 20-17 before winning the final set 25-20 for the 3-1 match victory.
 
Leeper paced the offense with 11 total kills for the night with a .588 attack percentage. Thang, Volk, and Sessions each recorded ten kills for Wabash. Beikes tied for the sixth-most assists in a four-set match with 37. He also made a team-best eight digs. Beikes and Sessions each recorded two solo blocks and one block assist in the match.
 
Wabash returns to action at Chadwick Court Friday evening with a 7 p.m. contest against Lakeland University.
