Two official reviews led to decisive penalty kicks in Wednesday's renewal of the men's soccer rivalry between Wabash College and DePauw University. The Little Giants answered a made PK from DePauw with a penalty-kick goal from
Jesse Martinez, resulting in a 2-2 tie between the two North Coast Athletic Conference opponents.
Â
Wabash (7-2-2, 0-0-1 NCAC) trailed 1-0 after a DePauw (6-3-3, 0-1-1 NCAC) goal by Braden Murphy in the fifth minute of action gave the host Tigers the early lead.
Bruno Zamora evened the score at 1-1, scoring his second goal of the season off a give-and-go pass from
Jose Escalante in the 12
th minute of the match.
Â
A foul at the top of the box in the 32
nd minute went to official review. The replay led to a yellow card on Wabash goalkeeper
Fernando Ramos in the box to give DePauw a penalty kick. The Tigers' Matthew Fogo scored to provide the one-goal advantage for DePauw.
Â
Martinez had a chance to even the match in the 70
th minute when his shot attempt sailed just wide and right of the empty DePauw goal. The Wabash junior made good on a second opportunity when a foul by DePauw on the right side of the penalty box was reviewed. The video review ended with a penalty kick awarded to Wabash. Martinez took the try and drilled the kick into the upper part of the net to even the score at 2-2 with 13 minutes remaining in the contest.
Â
Wabash put up one more shot on goal in the final period but could not break the tie in the Little Giants' first NCAC match of the season. The draw was the second consecutive in the annual matchup between the two rivals. The teams played to a 3-3 tie last year at Wabash.
Â
Wabash outshot DePauw 13-7 for the match with a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal. Ramos recorded one save in the contest for the Little Giants.
