OBERLIN, OH – The Wabash College soccer team needed a win to stay alive in a bid for a North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament but came up short with a 5-1 road loss at Oberlin Saturday afternoon.
Wabash finishes the season with a 10-6-2 record overall and 3-4-1 in NCAC action.
How it Happened
Oberlin (6-10-2, 2-5-1 NCAC) grabbed a 1-0 lead when Nathan Thompson scored in the tenth minute of the match. The Yeomen grabbed a 2-0 advantage on a goal from Toby Wells-Zimmerman in the 12th minute, assisted by Anthony Pacewicz.
Wabash got on the scoreboard to make it a 2-1 match on
Jose Escalante's 13th-minute goal, scoring on a penalty kick for his ninth of the season.
The Yeomen grabbed a 3-1 lead with a 19th-minute goal from Xander Francoeur, assisted by Wells-Zimmerman. Oberlin increased its advantage to 4-1 on Francoeur's goal in the 34th minute, assisted by Pacewicz. The Yeomen added a goal in the 87th-minute goal from Louis Gandelheid, assisted by Enrique Porras Jr. and Joel Beeson.
The Little Giants put up 17 shots with nine shots on goal but could not get anything past Oberlin goalkeepers Grayson Benson and Vince Fortuna with the clock running during the match. The Yeomen took 13 total shots with 10 shots on goal. Wabash goalkeeper
Fernando Ramos totaled four saves out of eight total Yeomen shots.
Henry Giesel played keeper in the final seven minutes and recorded one save for Wabash.
The Little Giants finish fifth in the final NCAC standings, three points out of fourth place for a berth in next week's conference tournament.
