Seniors Keep Little Giants In First Place With Road Win At Denison

Three Wabash College seniors spoiled the Denison University men's basketball senior day celebration in Granville, Ohio. Ahmoni Jones, Avery Beaver, Sam Comer, along with junior Vinny Buccilla, all scored in double figures and combined for 71 points in the Little Giants' 89-81 road win over the Big Red to remain in first place in the North Coast Athletic Conference standings.

Jones recorded his second double-double of the season with 17 points and ten rebounds. Beaver led Wabash (14-8, 10-3 NCAC) with a career-best 20 points. He connected on four of seven three-point shots as part of a 10-of-19 effort from long-range by the Little Giants as a team. The 52.6-percent shooting percentage from behind the arc is the best of the season for Wabash. Comer added 18 points and eight rebounds. Buccilla chipped in 16 points and three assists.

Wabash led for all but two minutes of the contest. The Little Giants held a slim lead in the first ten minutes until a Jones triple pushed the advantage to seven points at 23-16. Denison (12-10, 8-5 NCAC) closed the gap to two points with a three-pointer from Cameron Smith and a basket by the lone Big Red senior, Emmett Burnside, who finished with ten points and 12 rebounds for his own double-double. Wabash pushed its first-half advantage back to six points before another Denison rally. The Big Red tied the game at 39-39 on a Burnside dunk in the closing seconds of the half, but Beaver answered with a three-point just ahead of the buzzer to send the Little Giants to the locker room with a 42-39 lead.

Wabash held its lead in the early minutes of the second half until a steal led to an Aidan King layup to give the Big Red a 47-46 lead. King added a three-pointer on the next Denison possession to push the advantage to four points. Randy Kelley and Comer responded with back-to-back baskets to tie the game at 50-50, then a pair of Kelley free throws put Wabash back in front.

Denison got another three-pointer, this time from Nick Heath, to regain the lead. Comer drilled a three-point basket at the other end to put the Little Giants in front 55-53. Wabash took a five-point lead one minute later, but Denison tied the game at 61-61 with 8:57 left on the clock. That's when Wabash made its final big run.

The Little Giants outscored 13-4 over the next four minutes, led by five points from Beaver, four from Kelley, and two each from Jones and Comer. Gavin Schippert capped a 9-0 scoring run for the Little Giants with a put-back basket with 3:58 remaining to put Wabash in front by 11 at 76-65. Denison got as close as six points in the closing minute, but the Little Giants finished four of four from the free throw stripe to finish out the contest.

Denison matched the solid shooting effort by the Little Giants by hitting 29-of-68 total shots for 42.6 percent while making 15-of-27 three-pointers for 55.6 percent. Wabash won the rebounding battle 38-33.

Tyler Miller paced Denison with 22 points. King scored 14 points, and Scotty Dean added four three-point baskets for 12 points.

Wabash remains one game ahead of second-place Wooster in the win column and avenged a 73-65 home loss to Denison earlier in the season. Wooster defeated Kenyon 77-53.

The Little Giants are off until Saturday, when the team travels to Hiram College for its final regular-season road trip. Game time on Saturday is 6 p.m.
