Wabash Can't Hold Off Greenville In Extra-Innings Road Loss

Reid Ends Up A Double Away From Hitting For The Cycle

GREENVILLE, Ill. – Wabash squandered a three-run lead in the ninth inning Tuesday, allowing Greenville University to force extra innings. The Little Giants surrendered a leadoff home run in the bottom of the 10th inning in an 8-7 loss.

Senior third baseman AJ Reid nearly hit for the cycle, collecting a single, triple, and home run, a walk, and two RBI for Wabash (6-6). The Little Giants held a 7-4 lead entering the bottom of the ninth inning before Greenville (6-12) rallied for three runs in the ninth to tie the score at 7-7 to send the game into extra innings. The Panthers won the game on a walk-off home run by Rhett Pennington to earn the one-run win.

Freshman Trey Pitcock (0-1) came out of the bullpen for Wabash and took the loss. Sophomore Conner Stidham threw 1.2 scoreless innings in relief, allowing no hits, with one walk and one strikeout. Nicklaus Wangler pitched 5.1 innings as the Little Giants' starter. He allowed four runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out seven.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Little Giants got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with a pair of runs in the first inning with the big blow coming on an RBI double from freshman Will Fremion.

Greenville scored a run in the second and two in the third for a 3-2 lead. Wabash scored three runs in the fifth inning, buoyed by a two-run homer from Reid for a 5-3 lead.
Wabash kept Greenville without a run before expanding the lead to 6-3 the following inning. The Little Giants picked up a run when senior Reece Bauer drew a bases-loaded walk from junior Jared Lischer that scored sophomore Benjamin Henke.

The Panthers fought back, closing the gap to 6-4 until Wabash added some insurance in the eighth. The Little Giants got a run-scoring single off the bat of junior Evan Neukam, pushing the Wabash advantage to 7-4. The Little Giants could not hold the lead, as Greenville scored four times over the remaining two innings to grab the 8-7 win.
