Wabash Advances To NCAC Tennis Tourney Semis With 5-4 Win Over Wooster

Wabash claimed a three-set victory in the final singles match of Friday's quarterfinal round of the 2024 North Coast Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Tournament to defeat the fifth-seeded team from the College of Wooster 5-4 and advance to Saturday's semifinals.

Wabash (13-9) earned the fourth seed in the tournament thanks, in part, to an early 5-4 victory over Wooster (9-10) during the regular-season conference schedule. Friday's quarterfinal rematch came down to a tiebreaker in the third set of the fourth singles flight. Sophomore Tharakesh Ashokar won the opening set of the number-four singles match 6-1 but lost the second set 2-6 to Shivam Dewan from Wooster. The two played a third set to seven points and moved to a 6-6 tie to force a tiebreaker for the deciding victory. Ashokar won the set and clinched the decisive team point for the Little Giants with a 7-5 win.

The Little Giants opened with two victories in doubles play. Augusto Ghidini and Cole Shifferly scored an 8-2 win at number one doubles. Ethan Koeneman and Rafael Rin picked up an 8-4 victory in the third doubles flight.

Vittorio Bona gave Wabash a 3-1 lead in the team score with his straight-sets victory (6-0, 6-1) at number six singles. The Fighting Scots scored a point with a win in the second singles flight before Rin answered with a 7-5, 6-1 victory at number five singles. Wooster claimed wins at number one and three singles to even the score at 4-4 before the decisive fourth singles match was completed.

Wabash moves on to face the top-seed and tournament host Denison University. The Little Giants play the Big Red, ranked ninth in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, at noon.
