Hupmann Highlights Wabash Senior Day Win Over Oberlin

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Indiana --- Wabash College senior post player Noah Hupmann celebrated the final game of his career at Chadwick Court by posting his third double-double of the season in the Little Giants' 71-60 North Coast Athletic Conference win over Oberlin Saturday afternoon.

Wabash finished the regular season with a 17-8 overall record and a 13-3 mark in NCAC contests to finish second in the conference behind regular-season champion Denison University (22-3, 14-2 NCAC). The Little Giants earned the second seed in next week's NCAC Men's Basketball Tournament, giving Wabash a first-round bye. The Little Giants will face the winner of Tuesday's quarterfinal game between third-seeded Wooster (19-6, 11-5 NCAC) and sixth-seeded Oberlin (13-12, 5-11 NCAC).

Hupmann scored 12 points and snared a season-high 16 rebounds. The seven-foot, two-inch post player blocked four shots to take over sole possession of second place on the Wabash career record list with 167, breaking a tie with Chris Whitfield '88, who rejected 163 shots in four seasons with the Little Giants.

Hupmann joined fellow senior Vinny Buccilla, who finished with 14 points, seven rebounds, and three assists in his final home game, in the pregame festivities honoring the two seniors on the 2024-25 Little Giant squad.

Wabash raced out to an early five-point lead before Oberlin closed the gap to one point in the first two minutes on a pair of three-point baskets. The Little Giants got three-pointers from Buccilla and Nate Matelic to extend its lead to seven at 13-6 entering the first media timeout.

Oberlin trimmed the advantage to four points again before Wabash posted a 10-0 run to jump in front  26-12 with 5:28 on the first-half clock. The Little Giants expanded the lead to 38-23 at the break after preventing the visiting Yeomen from scoring a two-point basket in the first 20 minutes of the contest. Oberlin finished with seven three-point baskets and made two free throws to account for its 23 points. The Yeomen missed all 12 shots inside the arc in the opening half, with Hupmann accounting for two of those misses with blocked shots.

Wabash led by as many as 21 points in the second half before the Yeomen mounted a comeback. The Little Giants owned a 51-30 edge after a Hupmann putback basket with 13:13 left to play. Oberlin whittled into the lead, drawing as close as five points on two free throws from JJ Gray with 3:40 remaining in the contest to outscore the Little Giants 25-9 over a span of ten minutes.

Buccilla hit a pair of free throws to give the Little Giants a seven-point lead before Rich Brooks, who led Wabash in scoring with 16 points, drilled a second-chance basket with 2:23 left to play to make it a 64-55 contest. The Yeomen got as close as six points in the final 70 seconds on their final three-point basket of the game. Wabash made five of six free throws in the final minute to salt the game away for good.

Wabash shot 48 percent from the field, making 26 of 54 field goal attempts. The Little Giants hit 6 of 21 three-point tries for 28.6 percent and finished 13 of 18 from the free throw line. Oberlin made its first of ten two-point baskets with 16:36 remaining in the game, finished 22 of 68 from the field (32.4 percent) and 12 of 36 from three-point range (33.3 percent). The Yeomen made all four of their free throw attempts. Andrew Gannon paced the Oberlin scoring effort with a team-best ten points.

Wabash outrebounded Oberlin 42-35 and outscored the Yeomen 36-14 in the paint.
