Wabash Claims Conference Split At Wittenberg

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – Wabash traveled to Wittenberg University Wednesday afternoon for a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader at Carleton-Davidson Stadium. The Little Giants earned a split in the series, losing 12-11 in a game-one slugfest before taking a 7-5 victory in the nightcap.
 
The split keeps Wabash (21-9, 8-2 NCAC) in third place in the current conference standings, with three conference doubleheaders against Kenyon, DePauw, and Wooster remaining on the regular-season schedule. The top four teams in the final conference standings will meet in the NCAC Tournament in Chillicothe, Ohio.
 
GAME 1 | Wittenberg 12, Wabash 11
Wabash took an 11-10 lead into the eighth inning but could not hang on and fell 12-11 to Wittenberg (18-8, 3-3 NCAC).

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Little Giants got on the board immediately by scoring three runs in the top of the first inning, starting with an RBI double by Ben Henke. Will McKinzie singled home another run ahead of a sacrifice fly by DJ Mendez.
 
Wittenberg answered with a solo homer and a run-scoring fielder's choice to cut the lead to 3-2 before Camden Scheidt delivered a two-run homer to push the lead to 5-2. Evan Neukam made it a 6-2 lead with an RBI single, but the Tigers responded with two runs in the bottom of the third to make the score 6-4.
 
Michael Galanos doubled home a run in the fifth inning for a 7-4 Wabash lead, but Wittenberg came back with a three-run spot in the bottom half of the frame to even the score at 7-7. The Tigers took their first lead with a run in the sixth, but Wabash answered with four runs in the top half of the seventh, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of freshman Mendez to go with RBI singles by Henke and McKinzie.
 
Wittenberg scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to one at 11-10, then picked up a pair of runs in the eighth to move in front 12-11. The Little Giants were retired in order in the ninth to end the game.
 
Junior Caleb Everson (4-3) took the loss on the mound for Wabash.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 1-0, the Little Giants first put runs on the board in the third inning. Scheidt's run-scoring single highlighted a two-run inning for Wabash.
The Tigers failed to push any runs across before the Little Giants offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. Henke delivered a sacrifice fly to score McKinzie, and Galanos added an RBI single to push the Little Giants' lead to 5-1.
Wittenberg clawed back to tie the ballgame at five before Wabash reclaimed a 7-5 advantage in the eighth inning with a bases-loaded walk to Fremion and an infield single by Will Phillips.
 
Jackson Woehr (2-0) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Wabash (21-9, 8-2). The right-hander went 3.2 shutout innings while giving up two hits, allowing no walks and striking out one. He retired the Tigers in order in the eighth. Grant Stratton earned his second save of the season by holding Wittenberg scoreless in the ninth inning.
