CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. — A pair of early goals lifted the Wabash College soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Manchester University on Sunday afternoon at Fischer Field.
Angel Vazquez put the Little Giants (2-0-0) on the board in the seventh minute when he scored off a pass from Bryce Kinnaman, on a play started by an Alfredo Campos corner kick. Just three minutes later, Kinnaman doubled the lead with his first goal of the season, finishing a setup from Myles Bernat.
The Spartans (0-1-1) answered in the 34th minute when Chris Wilson collected a loose ball and scored unassisted, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
The teams played scoreless through the second half despite Wabash controlling much of the possession. The Little Giants finished with an 18-5 advantage in total shots, including a 10-4 edge on target. Wabash also forced eight corner kicks while not allowing Manchester any.
Wabash goalkeeper Ansel Rincon made three saves to earn his second win of the season. Manchester keeper Aaron Ketchmark kept the Spartans within striking distance with eight saves, including six in the second half.
The match featured 31 fouls between both teams along with three yellow cards, all against Manchester. Wabash was called offside three times to Manchester's one.
Vazquez, Kinnaman, Campos, and Bernat led an active Wabash attack, combining for 10 of the Little Giants' 18 shots. Jesse Martinez added three attempts off the bench.
The win moves Wabash to 2-0 for the second consecutive season and third time in the past four years. The Little Giants travel to Rose Hulman for a 7 p.m. match.
