CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. — A blistering first-half performance and a balanced scoring effort carried Wabash College to an 82-67 North Coast Athletic Conference victory over Ohio Wesleyan University on Wednesday evening at Chadwick Court.
The win keeps Wabash atop the NCAC standings at 5-1, tied with Denison University, as the Little Giants improved to 11-4 overall. Ohio Wesleyan dropped to 5-10 overall and 2-4 in conference play.
Wabash seized control early and never relinquished it, but Ohio Wesleyan showed flashes throughout the night. After the Battling Bishops opened the scoring on a James McCarthy layup,
Rich Brooks answered in the paint and
Luke Ellspermann knocked down a three-pointer to give Wabash its first lead. Brooks followed with another basket and
Colton Stowers converted a fast-break layup off a steal to spark an early 8-0 run that pushed the Little Giants in front 10-4.
Ohio Wesleyan briefly answered behind Isaac Ward, who scored twice in the lane, and a Kevin Gallagher three-pointer trimmed the deficit to 12-9. Wabash quickly regained momentum with consecutive baskets from
Josh Whack and Brooks, then stretched the margin with a decisive surge fueled by transition offense and second-chance opportunities.
Nate Matelic scored four straight points midway through the half, including a pull-up jumper on the break, and
Keegan Manowitz drilled a three-pointer from the wing to make it 31-19. Moments later,
Deric Cannady converted a fast-break three off a turnover as part of a 15-point run that turned a nine-point advantage into a commanding 34-19 lead. Ellspermann added two free throws, Brooks finished in the lane, and Manowitz capped the half by scoring in transition at the buzzer to give Wabash a 42-24 lead at intermission.
Ohio Wesleyan came out hot to start the second half, scoring on four of its first five possessions. Jake Lowman and Gallagher each connected from three-point range, while Ward added another basket in the paint to cut the deficit to 49-33. The Bishops continued their push with back-to-back threes from Gallagher and Lowman later in the half, trimming the margin to 55-39 and forcing Wabash to respond.
The Little Giants answered each time.
Colton Stowers finished a layup off a turnover and followed with a three-pointer to restore a 20-point lead early in the half. Brooks later knocked down a three off another Ohio Wesleyan turnover, and
Gavin Schippert converted a second-chance basket in the paint to keep the Bishops at arm's length.
Ohio Wesleyan mounted its strongest run midway through the second half behind Peyton Frey and Phil Wallace. Wallace scored five points during a 7-0 stretch, including a three-pointer and a basket off a turnover, to pull the Bishops within 62-48.
Josh Whack halted the rally with a hook shot in the lane off a turnover, and Wabash closed the game at the free-throw line and with timely baskets inside. A Stowers three-pointer with just over a minute remaining sealed the outcome.
Wabash placed five players in double figures, led by Brooks with 16 points. Whack finished with 15, Ellspermann recorded 11 points and 11 rebounds, Matelic added 12 points off the bench, and Stowers chipped in 10 points and five assists.
The Little Giants finished 30 of 55 from the field for 54.5 percent shooting. Wabash connected on eight of 20 three-point tries (40 percent) and 14 of 20 free throws (70 percent. The Little Giants also forced six turnovers and turned them into a 12-3 advantage in points off turnovers. Wabash also dominated the open floor and the interior, outscoring Ohio Wesleyan 11-0 in fast-break points and holding a 40-24 edge in points in the paint.
Ohio Wesleyan was led by Isaac Ward with 14 points, Peyton Frey with 13, and Kevin Gallagher with 11. Jake Lowman added nine points, while Phil Wallace chipped in 10 off the bench. The Bishops shot 34.4 percent from the field for the game.
Wabash will remain in conference play on Saturday afternoon, beginning a two-game NCAC road trip with a 2 p.m. contest at Kenyon College.
