CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. — Wabash stayed within striking distance through the first half but was undone by a decisive third-quarter run in a 10-5 home loss to Ohio Northern on Saturday at Fischer Field at Mud Hollow Stadium.
The Little Giants (1-4) trailed just 3-0 at halftime before the Polar Bears (3-2) erupted for six goals in the third quarter to build a 9-1 advantage. Wabash responded with four fourth-quarter goals but could not overcome the deficit.
Wabash finished with a 33-31 edge in ground balls and committed only 18 turnovers compared to 24 for Ohio Northern. The Little Giants also matched the visitors' physical play, causing 13 turnovers. However, the Polar Bears capitalized on extra-man opportunities and controlled possession at the faceoff X, winning 13 of 18 draws.
After surrendering two first-quarter goals, Wabash's defense settled in and limited Ohio Northern to one goal in the second period. Senior goalkeeper
Colin Krekeler recorded four saves in the opening quarter and added four more in the third, finishing with nine saves over 60 minutes.
Despite being held scoreless in the first half, the Little Giants generated opportunities. Wabash outshot Ohio Northern 10-4 in the second quarter, but Polar Bear goalkeeper Peyton Lich turned aside six shots in the period to preserve the first-half shutout.
Ohio Northern struck first at the 11:13 mark of the opening quarter and added a late goal with 1:50 remaining for a 2-0 lead after one. The Polar Bears pushed the margin to 3-0 at 12:05 of the second quarter before Wabash tightened defensively to keep the deficit at three heading into halftime.
The game shifted in the third period. Ohio Northern scored at 14:07 to make it 4-0, then added two goals in a 15-second span to extend the lead to 6-0. Wabash broke through at the 9:16 mark when
Will Sorg finished an assist from
Jake Pippen to cut the deficit to 6-1.
The Polar Bears answered with three goals in the final 3:30 of the third quarter, scoring twice on a non-releasable extra-man opportunity before adding a short-handed goal in the closing seconds to take a 9-1 advantage into the fourth.
Wabash continued to compete down the stretch.
Christian Dybedock converted a man-up goal at 12:11 of the fourth quarter off a feed from
Austin Clark. Clark added an unassisted tally at 8:17, and
Sam Santiago found the net at 2:41.
Evan Bair capped the scoring with an unassisted goal with 50 seconds remaining.
Clark led the Little Giants with one goal and one assist while firing six shots, four on goal. Bair placed all five of his shots on frame and scored once. Sorg totaled one goal on four shots and collected two ground balls, while Dybedock and Santiago each added a goal. Pippen finished with one assist and two caused turnovers.
Defensively,
Bryce Poling recorded two caused turnovers and two ground balls.
Lucas Cunningham added two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Hank Henry contributed two caused turnovers, and
Keegan Hatchell and
Eli Backus each collected two ground balls.
Ohio Northern outshot Wabash 30-27, including a 12-7 edge in the pivotal third quarter. The Polar Bears placed 20 shots on goal to the Little Giants' 16. Ohio Northern went 2-for-4 with the extra-man advantage and scored once while a man down. Wabash finished 1-for-5 on extra-man opportunities. The Polar Bears also held a narrow 21-20 advantage in successful clears.
Wabash returns to action Saturday, March 7, with a 1 p.m. road contest at Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio.
