RIVER FOREST, Ill. — The Wabash College volleyball team came up short in a pair of non-conference road matches Saturday, falling in straight sets at Dominican University before closing the day with a three-set loss at Concordia University Chicago.
Wabash opened the day with a 25-20, 25-20, 25-20 setback to Dominican at the Igini Sports Forum in a match that featured competitive sets throughout. The Little Giants hit .211 as a team with 29 kills, led by
Bawibawi Thang and
Jaden Greenwell, who each recorded 10 kills.
Andrew Hostetler and
Zev Wolverton added four kills apiece, while
Matthew Stitle directed the offense with 27 assists.
The opening set featured eight ties and three lead changes as Wabash stayed within a point through the early stages before Dominican used a late scoring push to pull away. The second set followed a similar script, with Wabash answering multiple Dominican runs to remain within striking distance before the Stars closed on a 4-1 run. The third set again stayed close into the late stages, but Dominican finished the match by scoring five of the final six points to secure the sweep.
Dominican finished the match hitting .286 with 36 kills, led by 12 kills each from Thomas Hirsch and Kendall Esparza.
Wabash regrouped and traveled across town to face Concordia Chicago in the nightcap at Geiseman Gymnasium, where the Little Giants dropped a 27-25, 25-12, 25-20 decision.
The first set was tightly contested with 16 tie scores and three lead changes. Wabash fought off multiple set points and evened the score at 25-25 before Concordia closed the frame with consecutive points to take the early advantage. The Cougars used a decisive early run in the second set to open a large cushion, holding Wabash to a .250 attack percentage in the frame.
In the third set, Wabash trailed early before trimming the margin to two points late behind kills from
Bawibawi Thang and
Andrew Hostetler, but Concordia responded with a closing run to seal the match.
Thang led Wabash against Concordia Chicago with 11 kills, while
Matthew Stitle finished with 21 assists and
Piotr Wolan anchored the back row with nine digs. The Little Giants posted a .052 team hitting percentage for the match. Concordia Chicago hit .394 and was paced by Tyler Holubek with 11 kills and Tyrise Armstrong with seven kills.
Wabash returns home Tuesday to face Franklin College at 7 p.m. at Chadwick Court.
