ATLANTA — Sophomore Nate Brumfield delivered a moment he will never forget Wednesday afternoon, launching his first collegiate hit — a three-run home run that struck the left-field foul pole — to power the Wabash College baseball team to an 8-6 victory over Emory University during the Little Giants' spring break trip.
Brumfield's sixth-inning blast capped a five-run rally that erased a two-run deficit and lifted Wabash (4-6) to the road victory. Reliever Jackson Woehr earned the win out of the bullpen, while Miles Williams struck out the only batter he faced to record his first collegiate save.
Wabash struck first in the opening inning. Bradley Gilliam reached base to begin the game and later scored when Will McKinzie delivered an RBI single to left field to give the Little Giants a 1-0 lead.
Emory (10-6) answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Jake Lawson scored on an RBI single by Jonathan Lang, and the Eagles added another run later in the frame to move in front 2-1.
The Little Giants tied the contest in the third inning. McKinzie reached base and later came around to score on an RBI single by DJ Mendez to even the score at 2-2.
Emory regained the lead with single runs in the third and fourth innings. The Eagles pushed across a run in the third before Zach Hanson doubled in the fourth to drive home Lawson and extend the Emory advantage to 4-2.
Wabash answered with its decisive rally in the sixth inning.
McKinzie reached on an error to open the frame before Mendez was hit by a pitch. Aiden Ramsey followed with an RBI single to right-center field to score McKinzie and cut the deficit to 4-3.
Brumfield then stepped to the plate and drove a towering shot down the left-field line that struck the foul pole for a three-run home run — the first hit of his collegiate career — giving the Little Giants a 6-4 lead.
Wabash continued to apply pressure later in the inning. Parker Smith singled and Jimmy Hawksworth drew a walk before Caleb Ellspermann delivered an RBI single to center field to score Smith. Hawksworth later crossed the plate on a wild pitch to cap the five-run inning and extend the Wabash lead to 8-4.
Emory trimmed the deficit in the eighth inning. Adrien Armstrong doubled home a run, and Lang added a sacrifice fly to pull the Eagles within two runs at 8-6.
Williams entered in the ninth and struck out the lone batter he faced to secure the victory.
Wabash collected 10 hits in the game. McKinzie led the Little Giants by going 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Mendez finished 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while Ramsey added an RBI single and scored a run. Gilliam doubled and scored once, and Smith added a hit and a run scored. Brumfield's three-run homer accounted for three RBIs.
Bryce Haney started on the mound for Wabash and pitched 3.0 innings, allowing four hits and three runs (two earned) while walking four and striking out one. Ethan Kimmerle worked 1.2 innings in relief, allowing four hits and one run with no walks.
Woehr earned the victory with 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing no hits while walking two batters. Trey Pitcock provided key middle relief, pitching 2.1 innings while allowing three hits and two runs with one walk and two strikeouts.
Williams recorded the final out with a strikeout to earn his first career save.
The Little Giants continue their spring break trip Friday with a doubleheader at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta beginning at noon.
