ADA, Ohio — The Wabash College tennis team secured a narrow 4-3 victory over Ohio Northern University on Saturday afternoon at the West Campus Courts, using a decisive performance in singles play to clinch the nonconference win.
Wabash (8-8) claimed the early advantage by winning two of three doubles matches to earn the opening point. The number one tandem of Augusto Ghidini and Rafael Rin defeated Dylan Catanese and Tyler Wood 6-4, while Murilo Guarniari and Edmon Neto matched that score with a 6-4 victory over Ethan Remy and Aiden Yeager at number two doubles. Ohio Northern (6-6) avoided the sweep at number three doubles, where Noah Ehret and Kessler Hackenberger posted a 6-3 win over Tharakesh Ashokar and Matthew Haas.
Leading 1-0 entering singles play, the Little Giants delivered three key victories to secure the match.
Guarniari extended the Wabash lead with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Wood at number two singles. Ghidini followed with a dominant performance at number three, rallying for a 7-6 first-set tiebreak win before cruising to a 6-0 second-set victory against Ehret.
Wabash added two more singles wins from Ashokar at number four and Neto at number five to push the team score to four points, clinching the overall victory before the remaining match concluded.
Ohio Northern earned its points at the top and bottom of the lineup. Yeager defeated Rin 7-5, 6-1 at number one singles, and Nick Miller secured a 6-3, 6-4 win over Samuel Soto Garcia at number six.
The victory gives Wabash a .500 record on the season and marks a strong start to its return from spring break competition.
