Little Giants Drop Two Matches to Open Orlando Spring Break Trip
ORLANDO, Fla. — The Wabash College tennis team opened its spring break trip with a pair of matches Monday, falling 7-0 to Carthage College in the morning before returning to the courts for an evening contest against Washington College (Md.).
Carthage (7-2) claimed all three doubles matches and swept singles play to hand the Little Giants a 7-0 defeat in the opening match of the day. Wabash, which entered the contest with a 5-6Â overall record, faced early pressure as the Firebirds secured the doubles point with victories at all three positions.
At number one doubles, Finn Morris and Diego Silva defeated Murilo Guarniari and Cole Shifferly 6-0. Luca Okino and Victor Pimenta earned a 6-2 win over Tharakesh Ashokar and Augusto Ghidini at number two doubles, while Ethan Foucheaux and Francisco Silveira completed the sweep with a 6-1 victory against Matthew Haas and Edmon Neto at number three.
Carthage carried that momentum into singles competition, winning each of the six courts to secure the team victory. Silveira rallied to defeat Shifferly at number one singles 2-6, 6-1, 10-1 in a match decided by a super tiebreaker. Silva added a 6-4, 6-4 win over Guarniari at number two singles, while Morris outlasted Ghidini 3-6, 6-2, 10-5 at the number three position.
Cyriac Cayuela earned a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Ashokar at number four singles. Linus Bangert defeated Vittorio Bona 6-1, 6-3 at number five, and Victor Pimenta completed the sweep with a 6-3, 6-2 win against Samuel Soto Garcia at number six.
Wabash returned to the courts later in the day to face Washington College (3-3) and jumped out to a strong start by sweeping all three doubles matches. The number one tandem of Guarniari and Shifferly earned a 6-4 victory over Tichi Chialva and Oskar Wroblewski. Ashokar and Ghidini followed with a 6-1 win against Maxi Synnestvedt and Jorge Urgal Zuleta at number two doubles, while Haas and Neto secured the doubles sweep with a 6-3 victory over Demir Isiker and Kohl Perkins at number three.
In singles play, Guarniari provided Wabash's lone completed victory with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Chialva at the number two position.
Washington picked up wins on the remaining finished courts. Synnestvedt defeated Shifferly 7-5, 6-1 at number one singles, Perkins earned a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Ghidini at number three, and Wroblewski defeated Eric Tien 6-1, 6-1 at number six.
The number four and number five singles matches were halted before completion, leaving Washington College with a 3-2 lead at the time play was suspended. Those matches are expected to be completed Thursday should travel and facility schedules allow.
Wabash continues its spring break schedule in Orlando on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Piedmont and Illinois Valley, scheduled for 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., respectively.
