CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. — The Wabash College tennis team mounted an impressive Friday-night rally from a 2-0 deficit before DePauw University captured the deciding point at number three singles to escape with a 4-3 North Coast Athletic Conference victory at Crawfordsville High School.
DePauw (10-7, 2-1 NCAC), 32nd in the nation and tenth in the Central Region in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, claimed the doubles point by taking two of the three flights. Finley Buelte and William Cramer earned a 6-4 win over Augusto Ghidini and Rafael Rin at number one doubles, while Scott Anderson and Thomas Hargreave outlasted Vittorio Bona and Cole Shifferly 7-6 (7-2) at number three. Wabash's doubles victory came from Murilo Guarniari and Edmon Neto, who posted a 7-6 (7-3) triumph over Paul Castleman and Will Hutchinson at number two.
Singles began with DePauw extending its lead as Scott Anderson defeated Rafael Rin 6-1, 6-1 at number two singles, the first court to finish and a 2-0 Tigers edge in the running singles score that translated to a 3-0 overall advantage.
Wabash, 53rd in the recent ITA rankings, then began its push back into the match.
Tharakesh Ashokar started the comeback at number four singles with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Viktor Ronnberg, cutting the deficit to 3-1. Vittorio Bona followed at number five with a 7-5, 6-2 win against Thomas Hargreave, and Edmon Neto evened the team score with a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Will Hutchinson at number six singles.
The Little Giants' surge continued when Murilo Guarniari battled back at number one singles. After dropping the opening set 6-3 to Finley Buelte, Guarniari responded with a 6-4 second-set victory and closed out the match with a 6-2 third set to give Wabash its first lead of the evening at 3-2.
That left the rivalry dual in the hands of the number three singles match, where Paul Castleman and Ghidini had been locked in a tight contest throughout. Castleman delivered the clincher for the Tigers, edging Ghidini 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 to provide the decisive fourth point and hand DePauw the 4-3 victory.
Wabash, now 11-9 overall and 2-2 in NCAC competition, returns to action on Saturday, April 11, at Oberlin College.
