CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. — Wabash College scored three first-half goals and added another early in the second half Thursday afternoon to defeat Bluffton University 4-0 in the Little Giants' home opener at Fischer Field.
Wabash (2-0) outshot Bluffton (0-1) 21-10 overall and held a 10-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Little Giants also recorded their first shutout of the season.
Blake Horn opened the scoring less than two minutes into the match, taking a pass from Alfredo Campos and finding the net for his first goal of the season and the eventual game-winner.
Campos doubled the Wabash advantage in the 19th minute with his second goal in as many matches. He finished the afternoon with three points on a goal and an assist and has recorded at least one goal and one assist in each of the Little Giants' first two matches.
Wabash stretched the lead to 3-0 at 30:03 when Sebastian Licon scored his first goal of the season off an assist from Jonathan Parr. The Little Giants continued to pressure the Beavers throughout the closing minutes of the half and took the three-goal advantage into halftime.
Willer Montesinos needed less than two minutes after the restart to produce the final goal of the match. Montesinos scored at 46:35 for his first goal of the season and a 4-0 Wabash lead.
The Little Giants continued to create scoring opportunities throughout the second half. Charlie Rawlins and Darinel Maus each generated chances, while Bluffton goalkeeper Zach Johnson stopped a penalty kick by Luis Martinez.
Wabash goalkeeper Rafael Cordova preserved the shutout with three saves over 90 minutes. He turned away second-half attempts by Mathias Garcia and Nick Meyer and helped the Little Giants withstand a late Beavers attack that included two corner kicks in the final five minutes.
Campos finished with three shots, including two on goal. Licon recorded three shots with two on target. Horn scored on his only shot of the match.
Johnson made five saves in 90 minutes for Bluffton. Uziel Garcia led the Beavers with three shots.
Wabash has recorded at least two assists in each of its first two matches of the season.
The Little Giants return to Fischer Field on Saturday, Sept. 5, for a 4 p.m. match against Illinois Wesleyan University.
