Chris Deig singled home the go-ahead run to Wabash its first victory of the season in an 11-10 win at Rhodes College Sunday afternoon.
Wabash watched a five-run evaporate in the seventh inning before pulling out the victory.
The Little Giants took an early lead on RBIs by
Montana Timmons and
John Pennington in the first inning. Rhodes answered with a pair of runs in the first and three more in the second to jump out to a 5-2 lead.
After a rough start through the first two innings, pitcher
Chris Widup settled into a groove, retiring 11 of the next 14 batters to hold the Lynx scoreless. Widup allowed seven hits through five innings with three earned runs along with a walk and a strikeout.
Eric Foust came on to work the sixth inning, holding the Lynx to one hit.
Deig started the comeback for Wabash in the third inning with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch before scoring on an RBI single by
John Holm. After a Timmons double, Pennington produced his second RBI of the game with a groundout to second to score Holm. The Little Giants added another run in the fourth after a
Tyler Hampton double, a sacrifice bunt, and an RBI groundout by
Robby Hechinger. An RBI groundout by
Andrew Rodgers in the fifth scored Timmons to give the Little Giants the 6-5 lead. Wabash tacked on three more runs in the sixth thanks to a two-run double by Holm after
Tanner Watson scored earlier in the inning on an errant throw by Rhodes. The Little Giants added their 10th run of the game in the seventh on a Holm groundout to score Watson.
Rhodes (5-2) touched up the Wabash bullpen for five runs in the bottom half of the seventh.
Matt Bowman retired one batter but allowed three runs on three walks and a wild pitch before giving way to
Ross Hendrickson, who allowed two runs on three hits and one wild pitch over the next two-thirds of an inning.
Luke Zinsmaster came on to shut down the Rhodes offense over the final two innings. The senior allowed two walks and recorded a strikeout in relief. He picked up the victory when Wabash rallied for its final run in the ninth.
Hampton started the final inning with a double down the left field line, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Watson. That brought Deig to the plate, who singled to center to score Hampton.
The Little Giants pounded out 13 hits, with Deig collecting three in four at bats. Timmons and Hampton also had three hits, while Holm picked up two hits and four RBI for the day.
Wabash (1-2) returns to action next weekend with a trip to Alabama to play a three-game series at Huntingdon College. The Little Giants will play two seven-inning games on Saturday before concluding with a single nine-inning contest Sunday.
