John Holm blasted two home runs as part of a 3-for-3 afternoon in Montomery, Alabama, but a late rally came up short for Wabash in the Little Giants' 11-8 loss at Huntingdon College Sunday.
Trailing by three runs in the last inning, the Little Giants got a one-out single from
Robby Hechinger and a walk to Holm to put the tying run at the plate. The last two Wabash batters struck out against relief pitcher Tyler Spivey, ending the threat and allowing Huntingdon (8-3) to split the two-game series. The Little Giants won Saturday's game 10-1 versus the Hawks.
Holm opened the first inning with a three-run shot — his second home run of the two-game series against Huntingdon — to give Wabash an early lead. The Hawks exploded for seven runs in the second inning, including five doubles in the frame with four coming in consecutive at bats.
The Little Giants tied the game at 7-7 in the third, starting with an RBI double by Hechinger to score
Chris Deig after he led off with a single. Hechinger came around to score when he advanced to third on a wild pitch and raced home on the catcher's errant throw on the play. Holm and
Montana Timmons followed with back-to-back walks before
John Pennington laced a double to lef field to score Holm. A sacrifice fly off the bat of
Andrew Rodgers tied the contest.
Huntingdon took the lead for good in the fourth inning with a pair of runs, then added one each in the fifth and sixth innings. Holm parked his second homer of the contest in the seventh to cut the lead to three runs. The Little Giants were retired in order in the eighth before mounting their rally in the night, only to come up short in the end.
Holm recorded four RBI in the contest to go with two walks and a 3-for-3 performance at the plate. Hechinger added two hits and an RBI, while Pennington and Deig each had a hit.
Luke Holm took the loss in relief of
Chris Widup. The younger Holm pitched 2-1/3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits with a walk and a strikeout. Widup threw 1-2/3 innings, giving up four earned and three unearned runs on seven hits with three walks.
Matt Bowman worked two innings of relief, surrendering two runs on two hits with a walk and four strikeouts.
Luke Zinsmaster held the Hawks scoreless over the final two innings. He had two strikeouts while allowing two hits.
Wabash (2-4) will prepare for its annual spring break trip next week. The Little Giants will travel to Texas for a six-game stretch in the San Antonio region, beginning with a nine-inning contest against DeSales University on Sunday, March 4.
