Texas Winning Streak Ends in 7-4 Loss

Box Score Box Score

Wabash saw its three-game Texas winning streak snapped with a 7-4 loss at Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton Wednesday night.

The biggest highlight of the game came early for the Little Giants, however, when freshman first baseman Clint Scarborough collected his first collegiate hit with a solo home run in the third inning to give Wabash a 1-0 lead. Scarborough played baseball at Salado High School, nine miles southwest of Belton.

The homecoming celebration for Wabash was shortlived. The Crusaders (9-5) answered with a run in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth before exploding for a four-spot in seveth to take a 7-1 lead. Montana Timmons drew a bases-loaded walk in the eighth inning to cut the lead to five runs before the Little Giants would draw even closer in the ninth.

Ross Hendrickson opened the final inning with a single through the left side and moved to second on another single by Scarborough. Robby Hechinger made it three hits in a row with a single through the right side to load the bases for Chris Deig, whose ground ball to third forced Hendrickson at the plate. After a strikeout produced the second out of the inning for Mary Hardin-Baylor, John Holm reached on an error to score the third run of the game for Wabash and keep the bases loaded. Timmons drew his second bases-loaded walk of the game to put the tying run at first for the Little Giants, but a game-ending strikeout gave the Crusaders the victory.

Wabash finished with nine total hits, led by Scarborough and Hechinger with two apiece. Deig, Holm, Timmons, Hendrickson, and Tanner Watson each had one hit.

Jeff Soller took the loss, working five innings as the starter for Wabash and allowing three runs on eight hits with two strikeouts. Ollie Bauer pitched two innings of relief, surrendering fourth runs on four hits with a walk and two Ks. Luke Holm allowed two hits in one inning of work without giving up a run.

Wabash (5-5) will take Thursday off before returning to action on Friday against DeSales University at 4 p.m. (CST) at Trinity University Ballpark. The Little Giants defeated DeSales 12-1 on Sunday to begin their spring break road trip in Texas.
