Chicago Takes Wabash 6-3 in Gary

Montana Timmons drove a run home for Wabash in the fourth inning with a single up the middle.
Box Score The Wabash offense showed signs of resurging Tuesday night, but the Little Giants fell short in a 6-3 loss the University of Chicago in the squad's annual game at the U.S. Steel Yard in Gary, Indiana.<br /> <br /> Wabash collected six hits, including two by Chris Deig, in the losing effort. The Maroons scored their six runs on nine hits against pitchers Chris Widup, Luke Zinsmaster, and Luke Holm.<br /> <br /> Chicago opened with runs in the first and second innings before Wabash answered with a pair in the fourth. John Pennington opened the inning with a single to right, followed by a shot to left by Deig. John Holm grounded out to the right side to move the runners to second&nbsp;and third, setting up an RBI single by Montana Timmons. A ground ball by Tyler Hampton was mishandled by the Maroons for one of their three errors, allowing Deig to score from third and tie the game at 2-2.<br /> <br /> The Maroons regained the lead with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Neither team scored until Wabash scratched out another run in the seventh when Ross Hendrickson reached on an error, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, then stole third and scored on an errant throw by the Chicago catcher.<br /> <br /> Chicago answered with two more runs in the bottom of the seventh to put the game away for the Maroons' 15th victory of the season (15-9).<br /> <br /> Hampton and Eric Bryant joined Deig, Pennington,and Timmons with hits. Bryant's single was his first of the season in limited action.<br /> <br /> Widup took the loss to fall to 3-4 for the year. He pitched 3-1/3 innings, allowing four runs on five hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Zinsmaster worked 3-2/3 innings of four-hit baseball. He gave up two runs and struck out five. Luke Holm pitched the final inning, striking out two batters while allowing just one hit.<br /> <br /> The loss was the seventh in a row for Wabash, and the 10th in the last 11 outings to fall to 13-20 for the season. The Little Giants return to Wabash Ballpark for a key four-game weekend series against the Denison Big Red. The Saturday doubleheader begins at noon.
