Tourney Hopes Remain with Baseball Saturday Split

Senior John Holm drilled two home runs on Saturday to help Wabash earn a split against Denison.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Wabash offense roared to life in Saturday's second game against Denison University, collecting 11 hits in the Little Giants' 9-0 win. The Big Red picked up a 12-1 victory in game one to earn a split.

The second-game victory, combined with a split at Ohio Wesleyan between the Battling Bishops and Wittenberg, allows Wabash to stay in the hunt for a berth in the upcoming North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament in Chillicothe, Ohio. The Little Giants (14-21, 5-7 NCAC West) trail OWU (19-14, 7-7 NCAC West) by two games in the win column, while Denison (11-23-1, 5-9 NCAC West) Wittenberg (19-14, 5-9 NCAC West) are two games back of Wabash with two games left to play for all three Ohio schools. Wabash still has two games at DePauw remaining on its divisional schedule.

The Little Giants jumped out to an early lead in game two, scoring a run on two Denison errors in the first inning. Another error in the second inning by the Big Red started a huge inning for Wabash. Trey Fankhauser reached base on a miscue by Denison's first baseman, advancing to second on a ground out. Robby Hechinger brought Fankhauser home with a single up the middle and advanced to second on the throw to the plate. Chris Deig followed with another single to plate Hechinger, then John Pennington added another base runner when he was hit by a pitch.

John Holm drilled a 1-1 pitch over the right-center field wall for his 11th home run of the season and 41st of his career to give Wabash a 6-0 lead. Tanner Watson and Hechinger stretched the Little Giants' lead in the third with back-to-back singles before a two-out, two-run single by Pennington. The final run of the game came in the fourth inning when Clint Scarborough was hit by pitch prior to Fankauser nailing a two-out triple down the right field line.

Sophomore lefty JT Miller earned his fifth victory of the season and fourth complete game, befuddling the Big Red hitters over nine innings. Miller scattered eight hits and did not walk a single batter while striking out six on the way to his second shutout of the season.

Holm produced the only run of game one for Wabash when he puched his 10th homer of the season over the right field fence in the sixth inning after the Big Red had taken a 12-0 lead. Andrew Swart fell to 3-5 for the season, lasting 4-1/3 innings while surrendering eight runs on 11 hits with two strikeouts. Luke Holm pitched 1-2/3 innings, allowing four runs — two earned — on four hits with one walk. Matt Bowman pitched the final inning, giving up one hit and a walk.

Wabash and Denison meet in the series finale on Sunday afternoon. Game one of the doubleheader begins at noon.
