Box Score 2 Wabash College sophomore
JT Miller set a school record with 17 strikeouts and combined with reliever
Chris Widup to fan 21 total batters on Saturday, but a tenth-inning error sent the Little Giants to a 2-1 loss against the College of Wooster. Wabash lost 10-5 to Case Western Reserve in the first game in Chillicothe, Ohio.
Miller broke the old record of 13 strikeouts set by Kelley House in 1989, and equalled by Matt McGuire twice in 1999 and by Mike Korfhagen in 2008.
Miller gave up back-to-back base hits to open the ball game against the Scots, then retired the six of the next seven batters by strikeouts. He allowed one more single in the third, picking up four Ks in that inning after Craig Day reached on a passed ball on one of the punchouts. Wooster (11-10) scrapped for a run in the fourth on a single, a walk, and two fielder's choices.
The Little Giants tied the game in the eighth inning when pinch-hitter
Tyler Owensby led off with a single, moving to second when
Lucas Stippler reached safely on a sacrifice bunt attempt that Wooster failed to field cleanly.
Chris Deig was hit by the first pitch thrown by Scots' reliever Steve Hagen.
Trey Fankhauser picked up the RBI for Wabash with a sacrifice fly to score Owensby.
Miller continued to cruise, retiring 21 of the 33 batters he faced in the contest overall. He gave up a two-out single in the seventh after throwing 130 pitches, giving way to Widup who saw the first batter he faced reach on an error before recording the first of his four K's to end the Wooster threat. Miller pitched 7-2/3 innnings, allowing seven hits and one run with two walks to go with his 17 strikeouts.
Wooster picked up the victory in the bottom of the tenth inning by loading the bases with three straight singles before hitting a ground ball to short against the Little Giants' drawn-in infield. The ball was fielded cleanly, but a wide throw to the plate allowed the game-winning run to score.
Wabash managed just four hits, with Fankhauser, Owensby,
Montana Timmons, and
Robby Hechinger each collecting one. Widup took the loss to move to 3-2 for the season. He pitched 1-1/3 innings, allowing three hits and one unearned run with four K's.
The Little Giants got off to a good start in game one against Case Western Reserve (19-10-1), picking up a run in the first against national pitcher of the week Jarrett Gish on an RBI double by
John Holm to scored
Chris Deig after he led off the inning with a single through the right side. The run was first allowed by Gish in 26 innings on the mound. The Spartans quickly answered with a pair of runs in the second, then exploded for six in the third off starter
Andrew Swart.
Wabash tried to rally by scoring three runs in the fourth inning. Timmons opened the frame with a double to right center, scoring on a
John Pennington single up the middle.
Andrew Rodgers added a single through the infield, with both players scoring on a two-run double by catcher
Tyler Hampton. Case tacked on a run in the sixth and one more in the seventh. Wabash picked up a final run in the bottom of the ninth when Hampton drilled another double before scoring on an RBI single by Deig.
Swart took the loss (3-3), giving up 16 hits and eight earned runs in 6-1/3 innings of work. He did not record a walk or a strikeout in the game.
Jeff Soller worked 2-2/3 innings in relief, holding the Spartans scoreless on one hit with one strikeout.
Wabash falls to 13-15 with the two losses. The Little Giants travel to Anderson University on Wednesday afternoon before returning to North Coast Athletic Conference West Division action next weekend with a four-game series at arch-rival DePauw University beginning Saturday afternoon.
