Little Giants Outlast Dominican in Weekend Finale

Trey Fankhauser collected the game-winning RBI with a bases-loaded walk in the 13th inning Sunday.
Box Score The Little Giants needed 13 innings to decide the outcome of their final game against Dominican University Sunday afternoon. Trey Fankhauser scored the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the thirteenth inning for the Wabash 6-5 victory.

Fankhauser also registered the game-tying run in the bottom of the ninth after he replaced an injured Montana Timmons earlier in the game.

“I didn't have much time to warm up but I came in there real excited,” Fankhauser said. “My eyes started getting a little big (in the last at bat) and luckily I got the walk. Their pitcher wasn't throwing hard by any means so I was waiting back for my pitch. He threw a ball and made it easy on me.”

Wabash blew a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the ninth by allowing three runs due to a struggling defense, reminiscent Saturday's 4-3 loss to Dominican, where four errors led the defeat. However, Wabash stayed true to its motto and fought its way through Sunday's marathon.

“We should have won it in nine; we had the opportunities to do that,” Coach Cory Stevens said. “We didn't make the plays behind Jeff (Samuel) in that ninth inning so we let them back in the door a little bit.

“But to have those extra innings with the pressure on our guys will be good for us down the road. It's great to see our guys persevere after we lost that lead.”

Jimmy Maxwell keyed the Little Giant victory in with an outstanding pitching performance on the mound. He entered the game in the tenth and dished out four innings of no-hit baseball for his first career win.

Luke Holm started on the mound for Wabash. The towering junior struck out five batters in five innings while only allowing 1 run. Austin Hawn and Christan Vukas each threw an inning of relief and didn't allow a run.

Timmons knocked in a run with a 2-of-4 hitting effort before fouling a ball off the top of his left foot in the bottom of the sixth. Fankhauser had a hit,  and RBI, and run scored in two at bats as Timmons' replacement. Clint Scarborough hit 2-for-5 on the day with an RBI and 2 runs scored — the last run being the game winner.

Robert Bavone took the loss for Dominican. He threw 3-2/3 innings and kept pace with Maxwell until the thirteenth. Bavone struck out the side in the twelfth before the Little Giants manufactured a run against him in the next inning.

Scarborough started the final frame with a leadoff single and KJ Zelenika followed with a well-placed sacrifice bunt. After a ground out, Tanner Watson and Robby Hechinger each reached base after being hit by a pitch to load the bases to set up Fankhauser's walk.

“We struggled towards the middle and end part of the game hitting,” Fankhauser said. “When we're not hitting as well as we should, we have the ability to get bunts down and steal bags.”

Wabash salvaged its weekend to finish 2-2 in four games. Its next scheduled game is Tuesday at Manchester College. First pitch will be at 4 p.m.
