“We had two innings where we gave up the big inning,” Coach Cory Stevens said about the game-two loss. “Errors compiled and when that happens, they score three runs or more and it's tough to bounce back from that.”
Wittenberg scored 3 runs in the second and 6 in the fourth in the night cap.
Chris Widup took the loss after completing 4 innings and allowing 11 hits. All 9 runs were charged to him, but misread fly balls and missed double-play opportunities extended the innings.
In game one,
JT Miller '14 pitched another strong outing but ended up with the loss. He threw all 7 innings and scattered 10 hits which led to 3 earned runs with 8 strikeouts.
The Tigers took an early 1-0 lead after the top in the first game, but an RBI single by
Montana Timmons in the bottom of the third gave Wabash its only lead for the day, 2-1. The Tigers recaptured the lead in the top of the fifth and never looked back.
“It's always tough in conference when you don't get that first game,”
Robby Hechinger said. “You really have to come out with a lot of fire for conference games. You'll lose if not.”
Hechinger went 4-for-7 with 2 runs on the afternoon.
The Little Giants will have a chance at redemption Saturday against Wittenberg.
“If you can split a four-game series in conference, you're still putting yourself in pretty good position, especially against a good opponent like Wittenberg,” Stevens said. “We have to come back tomorrow and fight, and try to get those next two.”
Wabash will play Wittenberg in another doubleheader Saturday at Goodrich Ballpark. First pitch for game one is at 12 p.m. with the second game starting at approximately 3 p.m.
Injury Note
Timmons returned to the lineup for the first time in two weeks after fouling a ball off his shin. He went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI in the first game. He appeared to reinjure his shin after his first at bat in the night cap and left the game.
