Box Score A five-running fourth inning proved to be too much for Wabash to overcome in a 7-3 loss at LaGrange Wednesday night. The game was the last in Georgia as the team heads north on Thursday.
Wabash took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after
Robby Hechinger singled and moved to second on a balk to open the ballgame.
Montana Timmons, who reached base three times in the contest, drilled a ball that the shortstop could not handle, bringing Hechinger home with the first run of the game.
The Panthers (7-8) answered with a run in bottom of the third, then broke the game open with the five-run fourth, picking up five hits off starter
Christian Vukas before
Austin Hawn closed out the inning with a pair of strikeouts.
The Little Giants battled back with a run in the fifth. Shortstop
Lucas Stippler ripped a two-out single down the right-field line, stole second, then scored on an RBI single by
Tanner Watson. Wabash added another run in the sixth after Timmons started the inning with a single throw the left side of the infield, then advanced to third on a single by
Andrew Rodgers. Freshman
David Oliger brought Timmons home with a ground ball to short to cut the LaGrange lead to 6-3. The Panthers picked up a final run in the bottom of the sixth to complete the scoring.
Stippler collected two hits for Wabash. Hechinger, Watson, Rodgers and Timmons had the final four hits for Wabash.
Vukas worked 3-1/3 innings in his first collegiate start, giving up six runs on eight hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Hawn pitched 1-2/3 scoreless innings with a walk and three strikeouts.
Jimmy Maxwell threw two innings of relief, allowing one run on three hits with three strikeouts.
Alan Corey struck out two of the three batters he faced in the final inning.
Wabash (2-3) were scheduled to travel north to Kentucky Thursday morning for a game against Transylvania at 3:30 p.m., but weather has forced that game to be cancelled.
