Box Score Wabash left 12 runners on base and struck out 11 times after scoring first in a 5-2 loss at Centre College Friday evening. The game ended the Little Giants' five-game road trip to Kentucky and Georgia during Spring Break.
Robby Hechinger scored the first run of the game after lacing a single up the middle and stealing third. He scored easily on a double by
Andrew Rodgers to put Wabash up 1-0. The hit extended Rodgers' streak to five straight game with at least one base hit.
The Colonels answered with a run in the bottom of the first off starter
JT Miller. Wabash threatened to add more runs in second after
Clint Scarborough opened the frame with a double to left-center field.
David Oliger followed with a walk, then both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt by
Justin Green. The Little Giants lost a chance to score when Scarborough was thrown out at the plate on a ground out to third. A wild pitch put runners at second and third, but a flyout to center ended the inning.
Centre (3-2) picked up a run in the third and another in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. The Little Giants loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the fifth on a single by
Lucas Stippler and walks to
Montana Timmons and Rodgers, but failed to score once again when the inning ended on a groundout to third.
Tyler Owensby started the eighth inning with a single, then stole second to put a runner in scoring position with no outs. But a strikeout, a pop up in shallow left field that was tracked down by the Centre shortstop, and fly ball to left once again left Wabash scoreless in the inning.
The Colonels added two more runs in the eighth off reliever
Chris Widup to stretch the advantage to 5-1. Wabash tallied the final run of the game in the ninth inning when pinch-hitter
Christian Vukas drew a one-out walk. Pinch-runner
Mitch Overley moved to second on a single by Hechinger. Overley scored on an error by Centre's second baseman, bringing the tying run to the plate with two outs after the 10th strikeout of the game. A final strikeout ended the contest, dropping the Little Giants to 2-4 for the season.
Miller took his first loss of the season, pitching five innings with six strikeouts while allowing three earned runs on eight hits and one walk. Widup worked three innings of relief, allowing only one earned run on three hits with two strikeouts. Hechinger and Scarborough each produced two of Wabash's seven hits in the contest.
The Little Giants return to Crawfordsville for the home opener at Goodrich Ballpark Tuesday against Franklin College at 3:30 p.m.
