Box Score 2 A dominating relief effort by
Luke Holm, clutch hitting over the final five innings, and a strikeout for pitcher
Christian Vukas game Wabash an 8-7 win in 11 innings in the series finale over Denison. The Little Giants lost 8-0 in game one.
Holm, on in relief of starter
Alan Corey, scattered eight hits and allowed just one run over seven innings to earn his second win of the year. The fourth starter for the Little Giants over much of the season, Holm struck out six batters without allowing a walk.
Denison loaded the bases in the bottom of the 11th after cutting the Wabash lead to one run, but Vukas slammed the door to any comeback for the Big Red by recording his first career save by striking out Tim Duxbury.
Wabash trailed Denison 6-0 entering the seventh inning when the Little Giants exploded for four runs. Vukas, serving as the designated hitter, was hit by ptich to begin the seventh and moved to second on a single by
David Oliger.
Hayden Williams battled through an 11-pitch at bat before drawing a 3-2 walk to load the bases.
Lucas Stippler came through for the Little Giants with a bases clearing single, ending up on third at the end of the play. He scored one batter later on a sacrifice fly by
Robby Hechinger.
Down two runs entering the eighth inning when Vukas started the rally once again with a triple to left-center field. Oliger singled him home to cut the lead to 6-5. An throwing error and fielder's choice put runners at second and third for Hechinger, who drilled a pitch through the left side of the infield. Williams and Stippler scored to tie the game at 6-6.
Neither team scored in the ninth or tenth innings before Wabash picked up two more runs in the top of the 11th. After the first two Little Giants were retired,
Andrew Rodgers produced a single through the right side, then advanced to second with his second stolen base of the season.
Clint Scarborough followed by drilling a 2-2 pitch to right-center to give Wabash its first lead of the day.
Tyler Hampton followed with a double to left for an 8-6 lead.
Danny Kraus, who started on the mound for the Big Red (19-12, 10-6 NCAC West) before moving to the designated pitcher spot, opened the bottom of the 11th with a triple. An apparant sacrifice fly to right field by Kyle Clemmenson ended with a drop and the fifth error for Wabash defensively and an 8-7 contest. A sacrifice bunt put Clemmenson at third, but he was cut down at the plate by Stippler on a ground ball to short. A single by Nick Marsit and a two-out walk to Andrew Touhy brought Duxbury to the plate to set up the game-ending strikeout for Vukas.
Oliger went 4-for-5 at the plate with an RBI and run scored. Trey Fankauser and Scarborough each finished with three of the Little Giants' 16 hits. Hechinger finished with two RBI.
Wabash swiped four bases, setting a new single season record for stolen bases with 65. The old record was set by the 1992 team with 61 stolen bases.
The Little Giants were blanked for just the second time this season in game one in the 8-0 loss. Wabash was held to four hits in the seven-inning contest by Duxbury's pitching effort. Hampton had two hits for Wabash in the effort.
Wabash (13-18, 5-7) remains in a tie for third place in the North Coast Athletic Conference with Ohio Wesleyan and Wittenberg. The Little Giants travel to Delaware, Ohio next weekend to face OWU in the last divisional series of the season. The top four teams in each division move on to the NCAC Crossover Series with chance to advance to the conference tourney in Chillicothe, Ohio in May. The two fifth-place teams in each division will meet to play for ninth place in the final league standings. Prior to the four-game set in Ohio, the Little Giants will play at Butler University on Tuesday.
