Mike Gore's goal in the final minute of Sunday's match gave Wabash a 4-3 victory at Allegheny.
Gore broke the 3-3 tie of the back-and-forth battle of North Coast Athletic Conference schools. He took a pass from
Francisco Trejo before beating the Gators' goalkeeper with a shot toward the near post for the game winner.
Wabash was forced to rally from a one-goal deficit in the first half after taking an early lead.
Riley Pelton provided the first goal for the Little Giants in the eighth minute after collecting a pass from
Steve Magura in front of the net. Allegheny (4-7-1, 0-3 NCAC) responded with a pair of goals in the span of four minutes. The goal by Cameron Olson ended a five-game streak of shutouts by Wabash. Stefano Wach gave the Gators the 2-1 lead in the 17th minute.
The Allegheny lead held up until late into the first half when Trejo scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season in the 41st minute off a pass from
Zach Woloshin to knot the game at 2-2 heading into halftime.
Wabash struck first in the second half with a goal from
Ivaylo Mantchev on a direct kick from 20 yards out on the restart in the 65th minute. That goal stood up for 16 minutes before Allegheny's Tolossa Hassan drew the Gators even at 3-3.
Both teams appeared headed toward overtime after
Dayton Jennings made a save to start the final minute of play, one of four on the day for the Wabash goalkeeper. The Little Giants countered off the safe with a quick attack down the sideline, leading Trejo to find Gore. The freshman blasted a shot with 11 seconds remaining to give Wabash the road victory.
"This is always a tough road trip, traveling to Allegheny," Wabash head coach
Chris Keller said about the eight-hour drive to Meadville, Pennsylvania. "They really outplayed us for most of the game. We got off to a good start with the early goal, but our mental focus just wasn't there for their two goals.
"We got great effort from our attack today. They made the most of their opportunities and finished the chances we had. This was a good overall performance in terms of getting a conference win and the three points in the standings. But I have to give a lot of credit to Allegheny for the game they played. Now we have to regroup as a unit and get ready to play a really tough match Wednesday."
Wabash outshot the Gators' 19-15 overall with a 9-7 edge in shots on goal.
The win was just the second by a Little Giant soccer team versus Allegheny. The only other win came in a 4-1 contest in Crawfordsville in 2009. The two teams tied 1-1 last season. Wabash picked up its 10th win of the season for an overall record of 10-0-2, marking the eighth time in school history the team has posted double-digit wins.
The conference win moves the15th-ranked Little Giants to the top of NCAC standings with a 3-0 league mark. Wabash faces its toughest portion of the 2014 schedule this week. The Little Giants travel to regionally-ranked Ohio Wesleyan University (9-3-1, 3-0 NCAC) for a Wednesday evening match before returning home Saturday to face second-ranked Kenyon College (11-0, 3-0 NCAC) at 1 p.m. at Mud Hollow Stadium.
